Dyson vacuums worth the money?

they sure are expensive! costco sells like 3 ranging from 4-5-600! We need to buy a better vac for our new house as we currently have a $100 bissel bagless. it does a decent job but i want a better vac so we can really clean out the carpet when our baby starts to crawling around. any comments on dyson?

Dyson's are plastic toys made for soccer moms. If you want a real vacuum cleaner, get a commercial vacuum cleaner.

I'm sure someone else will recommend some good commercial models.. you can tell they're made for commercial use when the vacuums are fairly cheap - but still made out of METAL.. and they're not shiny or pretty in any way.

$100 is a bit low. A decent vac is going to set you back a good bit of money, but the Dyson prices seem absurd.

Unless you have shag carpet, I recommend joining the 21st century and getting a Roomba. Pushing vacuums around is for suckers.

Consumer Reports lists Sears vacuums as some of the higest rated ones. Even over some $1000 vacuums.
My wife was going to spend the money on a Simplicity ($500+) vacuum, until I read those reports.. she's convinced too, and we're going to settle on a Sears.

The guy at the Vacuum store, who also sells Dyson was really pushing the Simplicity, which cost about the same as a Dyson. He said the Dyson's are in their shop for repairs all the time.

Everyone I know who has a Dyson loves it, but I don't think they are worth the cash. If I could pick up a Dyson for $200 I probably would. We have a Hoover bagless and its SOOOO messy to empty. We are going to a bagged canister vac now.

I heard they are not worth it. You are better off with a Eureka BOSS SmartVac. It's the one that costs $138 bucks. I started a thread about vacuums at one point. Amazingly, there was some flaming.

i tried the roomba once and promptly returned it to homedepot within 30 days. i found it to be more of a gimmic than an actual vac. costco sells an eureka, i'll look into that. i want something that can really clean the carpet.

We bought a month subscription to Consumer Reports online for $5. It looks like its going to save us over $200 when we don't spend nearly as much on an inferrior vacuum.

What didn't you like about the Roomba?

I've found that if nothing else, my Roomba is a million times better than my upright vacuum simply because the Roomba actually gets used, but it also cleans comparably to my upright.

We use a Kenmore we got a sears on clearance for $70. Cleans just fine. I don't know what a $500 vacuum can do other than suck

i feel it was alright on hardwood and kitchen tiles picking up hair and dust but not so on rugs and carpet. i can't imagine the little motor creating enough suction on carpet compared to regular vaccums. we may give it a try again because i certainly do hate vacuuming.

Remember that consumer reports factors the price of the vaccuum into their recommendation. Like all things, there is a diminishing return for the dollar. Consumer reports tries to hit the 'sweet spot', but that doesn't mean that you are getting the best vaccuum, just the best value.

Yeah, you could buy 7 Kenmores or 1 Dyson.

Dyson is just overrated because they have some bloke on their commercials.

I can attest to the value of the Dyson.

I used to be a member of the "$100 vacuum is the way too go" crowd. However, we have three Australian shepherds who seem to shed on different cycles. We burned through 4 cheap vacuums in about a year before I finally took a friend's advice and bought a Dyson Animal.

Our floors have never been cleaner and we have had the Dyson for a year and a half without issue.

The Dyson is well worth the $$$ in my book, I just wish I hadn't bought those three additional cheap $100 vacuums a couple of years ago

Save extra $60 by:

1) Go to CR website and search for what you're interested in (vacuum)
2) Find out it is the March 2006 issue
3) Visit public library and read article for free

Partially false. The price has NEVER entered into the score for the performance rating of the model. All the scores are tallied, and the results listed from best to worst. Then and only then do they look at price in choosing a Best Buy. The article text may mention pricing, but that doesn't affect their performance score at all.

I have a 10-year old Kenmore upright (uses bags). It has a charcoal filter pack that needs to be replaced about every 6 months or so. The filter seems to help with filtering the exhausted air.

Much like my last ex-GF, my vacuum has seen a TON of use, but unlike her, it still sucks just as strongly as the day I bought it.

Seriously though. The vacuum has the detachable hose. I've used to pick up sawdust, metal shavings after case modding, vacuuming the car, etc.

IIRC, I paid about $170 for it ten years ago, which was a lot for a vacuum back in 1996. And it's still running.

Kenmore, FTW.
