If this is anything like my 14" eMachines e620 series laptop ($379 @ Buy.com), then it's highly upgradable. With mine, you could install a dual-core processor, up to 4 gigs of RAM, up to 500gb hard drive (currently available max), 802.11n Wifi, etc. Pretty nice - a few cheap upgrades and you've got a rockin' machine for well under a grand.

I do recommend installing Windows XP on it. There are drivers if you search around...it's WAY faster with XP. Or upgrade the processor to a dual-core, if this e625 series is upgradable...

Egg has the Lenovo for $450. They had the really nice Y530-5900U for $550 but it's up to $600 now.

This week's $429.90 Staples deal seems to be better with better price and better spec. It's an HP.

Except, of course, OP posted a $300 notebook (no rebate) before his thread got hi-jacked...

This just shows that there is a constant interest

in low-priced laptops . A few interesting models worth

mentioning , but not necessarily worth their own seperate

posting . < its good to comparison shop , price vs.

features >

BTW : some small notebooks can't write to CD/DVDs?floppies .

You can always creat your lecture notes &/or documents ,

zipped 'em , then email them to 1 of your 2 or more email

accounts , then later when you are @ another system , open

your email & print/save a hard copy ...

There is also this similarly spec'd Acer Notebook for $299 online (although its refurbished).

It's the same price at Tiger Direct/Compusa.com/Circuitcity.com since they are all now owned by Tiger Direct, but the Circuit City one has free shipping (not sure about the others).

I was thinking about getting one for basic MS office work and Web surfing, especially if there are XP drivers avaliable.

There's no hijack here. Not everyone has Fry's B&M around them. Read above and you will realize that $300 is only B&M price and the website price is actually $370. Other people are offering alternative products in similar price ranges.
