E-Zpass assignment to only vehicles on the application?

Why does E-Zpass require this? I can't use my E-Zpass when riding with a friend, or in a rental?

Can E-Zpass be emailed the info? Does it have to be before the trip or can it be taken care of in case they complain about it?

I suspect it is some anti-fraud thing. You should go on their website and directly research the question you have. My brother in law got a substantial ticket in the mail when he used his E-Zpass in another car, both owned by him.

I've interchanged EZPasses before and never had a problem. I've used mine in my girlfriend's car, and I just used my friend's in my car when I went to Vermont this October.

I know in Mass you can go on the website and update vehicle info or call them
Think the last time I did that they said it would work in state right away but may take a couple of days to work out of state

Don't know much about EZpass but this is probably correct. With the toll highway here, you can only use the transponder with the cars you own. Otherwise people would pass them around to avoid the video toll charge.

When I was renting cars, we had a few customers come in where the transponder didn't register, since the car they were driving wasn't theirs. The 407 ETR in Toronto is fully automated, so it knows. Then again some folks would get lucky and it would work, so I guess the system isn't perfect. Unfortunately, our head office charged a $20 admin fee on top of the toll if the plate got billed. We used to tell people to avoid the toll highway because of that.

Speaking of tolls, I'm surprised the States hasn't adopted the ETR (electronic toll route) technology. There are no toll booths here. It snaps a picture of your plate when you enter and exit the highway, then charges you by the number of kilometres you drove, then bills you at the end of the month. There's no toll plaza either. They're just regular highway interchanges with the camera gear mounted on an overhead pole. Of course it makes the toll collectors obsolete. Gotta keep those useless civil servants working.

I just went to the NY E-Zpass site. I thought I had one from the PA Turnpike & had forgotten that I changed a while ago. The PA TP web site isn't very clear and in the OP I was quoting that the agreement on that web site. I think the PA TP agreement is more restrictive.

The NY site FAQ indicates that it is by class of vehicle and makes it sound as if there is no problem in moving it around between different vehicles of same class (number axles, less than 7000 lbs, etc.).

So this may differ by state. Think I will call next week.

This. My daughter has borrowed mine and used it in her corolla on several occasions. How would they even know? The system that reads the tag, and the system that videos passing license plates, would have to be in sync somehow, and they would have to use OCR to get the plate number off the image.

In fact some do exactly that. PA had complained to me about using the wrong car! WTF. I called & got things taken care of. I think they would have fined me. This is why I was asking in the first place. But, it seems that NY at least does not have an issue as long as the vehicle is the same class.

I've switched ezpass around without issue, but others have claimed they get emails if the plates don't match what's on file. I don't know what triggers the emails or anything. They seem to mainly be used to warn drivers in case theirs got stolen

So that if someone steals it out of your car and uses it, they can track it more easily.
Come on, I'd think it would be VERY easy. When someone goes through the toll both with a transponder reported as stolen, "click" picture taken. You now have the license plate, direction of travel, and plenty of state troopers in the area with nothing better to do than make some extra money for the state.

I used my parents' ezpass from NYS with a rental car to move from college in Chicago back to NY a few years ago. No problems there.

IIRC, the license plate reader system is gradually being integrated more and more into the whole system. So if they don't match the transponder to the plate yet, they soon will.

In some states such as Arkansas the info from a license plate number is only available for law enforcement purposes which does not include tolls.

I dunno. I just know that's how I-PASS works (which I assume is pretty much the same thing as EZPass)

My E-Z Pass was issued by NY and it is tied to vehicle class as mentioned above. If you get a rental, just go to the website, enter the make, model and plate number of the car you will use that tag in (if you have multiple EZ Passes, be sure to associate the correct tag ID with the car you intend to use) Be sure to remove it from your list of Authorized Tag Users when you are done with the rental or borrowed vehicle.

May I use / move my transponder from one vehicle to another vehicle?

Yes, the transponder may be used in another vehicle provided both of the following conditions are met:

All vehicle license plate numbers in which you intend to use your transponder must be listed on your account.

All vehicles which you use your transponder must be of the same class. For example, if you registered your transponder with a 2-axle, 4 tire vehicle with non-commercial license plates, you may only use that transponder with other 2-axle, 4 tire vehicles with non-commercial license plates listed on your account.

NOTE: Commercial license plates, including dealer plates, are not permitted on individual accounts.

I used mine on my motorcycle and sometime it wouldn't read. I got a ticket in the mail. Normally they just look up your plates and add the toll to the right account. It wasn't a problem adding the motorcycle after the fact, but I think they are just trying to limit the number of extra calls they have to make.
