Hi - I want a budget system - I have a new Abit IP35-E board - HP Ram - and a Antec Case with Earthwatts PS.

I was looking at the E2160 - since I think its suppose to drop to $64 today - though havent seen any retailer do it yet. But is there any diff. btwn that and the 2140 - price? performance?

I was just looking to OC to 3ghz based on what I read the 2160 seems easy and reliable.

thanks

The two chips are very similar, but most 21xx chips 'top out" with their FSB around 400 (or sometimes a little higher). If you get a 2140 that won't run a high fsb, the lower multipler versus the 2160 may limit you on your OC.

It's really a crap-shoot on what you will get. if you are talking an extra 5 bucks, get the 2160 and have a little more security with the higher multiplier...

just my $0.02

Thanks - I'll go with the 2160 then -- my target is $60 -$80 range.

Really they're the same by all means, sans different multipliers, IMO. This of course assuming same stepping (both L2 or M0). Makes me think that Intel don't even bother binning these two lowest-end conroe chips. So yeah I should say 2160 is a bit safer if you want the max OC. I have both an E2140 and an E2160, and the quality of E2140 is better. (E2140 does 3.20GHz @1.28V, E2160 does it @1.31V) But E2160 can also do 3.60GHz thanks to x9 multi, and all indications i've seen so far tells me that it's not feasible with E2140, which needs 450FSB to reach 3.60GHz. (It does 3.40GHz @1.37V, though)

So it's really a luck of draw. Check out Micro Center. They change the prices every other day, but you will often find and E2140 for $60 and E2160 for $80.

See my GA-73VM-S2 w E2140 post here, but don't waste lot of time reading through it.

When I bought the E2140, it was around $80. That was just a couple weeks ago. I found the E2180 for $88.

If the glove don't fit -- you must acquit.
For 88 -- don't hesitate.

A 2160 @ 333bus will be an EASY 3ghz. Also your HP ram can run 1:1 @ 667.

You have put together a GREAT budget build there.
I can personally endorse that case (NSK4480 Case w/ EarthWatts 380 PS??), IP35-e and I have an e2140 (@3.2). All good bang/buck$ parts. Add a BiG Sata hdd, DVD-rw and 8800gt. You could have a nice rig.

Thanks mate - I just kept reading the E2160 will drop to $64 but havent seen that happen yet - was that just a rumor or these retailers dont follow the price drops by Intel? Thanks!

You got two incredible chips then. My E2140s each need 1.425v (BIOS) to reach 3.2Ghz stable. I'm still happy with them, even though they run warm (84C with CoreTemp 0.96), and take a bunch of volts.
I got mine at Microcenter for $60 ea.

I got 3.2 ghz with 1.325v's guess i got a good one runs smooth and passed 24h orthos. I am happy now I can wait for the new quads but not be stuck with my shitty 2800+ for a HTPC.

What motherboard? I was able to lower the vCore by ~0.05V depending on memory configuration, going from 680i to BadAxe 2.

0.06~0.07v droop? I guess that's P35-DS3R, not 965P-DS3R? Interestingly Intel website lists P965 and 975X (not P35 or X38) as officially supported chipset for all 800 FSB CPUs including the newest E4600. I wonder if the new chipsets are optimized for higher FSB CPUs, thus taking more effort for the lower FSB CPUs? Can you select straps in the BIOS, or have you tried BSEL mod?

Also, to make things even I should say I set the vCore of my E2140 at 1.30V in the BIOS with 'Enhanced Power Slope' enabled (not sure what it does but I assume it gives more voltages), which drops to 1.28v idle in Windows and further drops to 1.27v under load.

I know this is kind of side tracks from my thread - but whats the deal with the E8400 - why is it so popular - is it a new chip that came out on Jan. 20?

I'm waiting for the E2160 price cut myself. Mwave seems to be the cheapest so far. I'm also looking for the cheapest IGP that can get a e2160 to ~3ghz, any recommendations?

Yeah mwave after shipping is like $77.xx -- but am waiting for it to drop to $64 - hopefully very soon.

GA-73VM-S2 seems interesting.

I have virtually the same group of pieces and I decided to go with the E2180 from Clubit for $85. Today I'd do the E2200, only about $90. Shame to have your MB cost more than the CPU.

Also I compared Clubit and Mwave on resellerratings, huge difference.

Your money, your choice.

Just a little dose of reality here...

Bought an E2200 and it hits a wall at about 275 FSB - 3.0GHz. Tried to lower the multiplyer and it doesn't matter - won't boot into Windows above 275. Core voltage is set to 1.408 V, or something to this effect - vdrop is noticable, down to 1.38 or so on my IP35-E. At any rate, not all the E2xxx chips are going to break 3G; mines running fine at 266x11 though which is not too bad considering how much it cost (part of a $80 fry's combo).

I also have the IP35-e and bought the cheap fry's combo. Haven't had a chance to put it together yet.

Maybe those are not retail prices. I didn't look, but maybe that is OEM 1000+ piece pricing. Street prices drop in advance of an official price cut, when the new prices are public knowledge.

My first E2140 had a brick wall around 350FSB. But I checked it on 3 different boards (based on different chipsets)

My 2nd E2140 which does 3.4GHz didn't go past 333 FSB on GF7150 boards (with and without a discrete GPU). So there is certainly 'chemistry' issue between these 800 FBS based CPUs and today's boards.

But I do agree with you that not all E2xxx chips are capable of 3.0GHz+. Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to overclocking.

I think those are retail prices - just because one poster mentioned they bought their processor in E2160 in December for $79~ shipped - its the same price now.

I just dont think the retailers have adjusted their price to the E2160 yet.

I am hoping it drops to $64.

By the way is there any difference other than the ghz between the E2160 and E2180?

Thanks!
