I don't think newer boards that can do 500+MHz could be limiting for the E4300. Even backing down to an 8x multiplier gets you to 4GHz, certainly no E4300 can do this under normal conditions.

Cheaper memory is limiting imho, most people wanting to save some money will fall back to DDR2-667 or cheap DDR2-800 CL5, and there is where you can run into trouble setting higher ratios or latencies.

My new E4300 is running Orthos right now @3.3GHz@1.45V@8x multiplier. FSB is 413MHz and Ram is 832MHz CL5.

So far no problems, but if i set my G.Skill CL5 DDR2-800 to lower latencies or go above 850 MHz i am in trouble

P.S. I use an P5B-E, not really cheap, but certainly budget quality.

ummm i dont know if you can say that it cant do very high overclocks...im running my e4300 at 3.6 gigs with only 1.4 v core acutal...anfortunately my piece of crap evga 680 i cant do more than that for some reason....i know i could push this thing alot higher with a better mobo...im running at 39c...44c under full load.

as for which mobo you need to get i would go with something cheap...i love the 680 i chipset but this freakin bioses and stuff with this mobo sux a biggie i love the fact that you can unlink memory on your overclock...that way you get away with not having a major issue with memory...beware of which one you pick though if you get it

I am just getting started with the E4300 on the 965P-DS3. Antec 900 case with all the fans on their slowest settings and only up to 300 x 9 so far. Prime95 temps are in the low 30s, which makes me suspect the quality of the sensor.

I have the latest BIOS, and I am not yer far enough along to know if the BIOS is messed up, or not. It seems that after I stress test, or do much of anything at all, that once I shut down or reboot, the next time around it refuses to boot at all... it just shows me a black screen with no POST info at all.

What is weird is that I do not have to clear CMOS or anything, just power down with the power switch, wait a while, and then boot again. Doing this, however, partially undoes my OC settings. I have to switch back from AUTO to MANUAL and the rest of the settings reset on their own.

This looks to me to be a BIOS problem, but this build is so new, and I am so used to the DFI mobo BIOSes, that I just might be missing something basic here.

No sir, you're not missing anything. Sorry to say that appears to be the dreaded "cold boot" problem (which scared me away from these very boards.) Check out the official gigabyte DS3 thread in the motherboard category for more info.

Edit: Recommend downgrading the BIOS to F7. Seems to be the sweet spot for that board.

Thanks, I think I will try that next, once I am halfway sure I have my memory issues sorted out.

Get the DS3 over the S3. The "D" in "DS3" stands for Durability. The board uses all solid state capacitors, and will result in a longer lifespan.
