I'd like to see how these OC.

Between the 5200, 7300, 8400, my head is spinning. New video card, new CPU? My stuff is fast enough. But the prices on the 5200 and 7xxxs are niiiiice.

How does it compare to my current E6300, better? cuz I don't get why the old E6600 is still selling for about $120..

That's pretty good considering just before the E7xxx series came out, we had the E4xxx series which cost more. T'is a great time to be a budget overclocker!

Don't forget the beauty of the e5200 besides the price.

12.5x multiplier means 320MHz fsb gets you 4GHz.

This now means a myriad of sub $50 motherboards will work fine and hit the magical
4GHz wolfdale speeds. I don't think 2MB L2 cache vs 3MB will make any significant difference.

This also means anyone that has $135 and has overclocking know how is gonna match systems costing twice as much or more factoring in the $120-$160 e4xxx or 6xxx and a motherboard that can support a higher fsb for these lower multiplier cpu's.

Only those buying quad cores will have any peformance advantage.

Just for comparison, the retail E7200 is selling for $100 at Microcenter. Those have a $113 tray price (1000 units). The E5200 is supposed to have a $84 tray price. Maybe we will see it for sub $80 soon.

Do you think that these will run cooler than an E2140 @ 3.2Ghz, at a comparable or faster clock speed?

That really is a good price for the performance you'll be able to receive with some very moderate overclocking.

Any cheapo motherboard that supports a 1066MHz fsb will work, even if it has no overclocking options. Just do the 1066 mod and you get 3325MHz. I am pretty certain the e5200 can do that at stock voltage, and still run relatively cool.

i remember in the other thread someone said 5200 lacks a certain instruction set and lesser cache than other chips. would this be detrimental for running games?

Yes, these are designed as replacementes for E2xxxx so these are now the new Ghz-to-Price ratio king.

Maybe it lacks SSE 4.1 I don't know. It has 2MB of cache vs. 3MB for the E7X00 and 6MB of L2 cache for the E8X00.

It will be slower than the faster/more cache cpus. Do you consider paying more for more performance good?

Honestly nothing but encoding applications use SSE4 currently so missing that insruction set wont be detrimental to gaming at all.

However losing 1MB of cache can be a small hit (0-6%)

I would imagine the extremely easy 4ghz OC will more than make up for the missing 1MB of cache.

Going from 1MB cache to 2MB makes a bigger impact, upwards to 3, 4 or 6MB cache gives smaller performance gains.

I'm debating whether to replace my E2160 @3 with this. May not be worth the money for the performance gain.

What would be a good cheap motherboard to pair with this for overclocking?

Right now I'm using an ASRock 775Dual-VSTA with a P4 520 2.8, but I don't think that it will work with the 45nm chips (and it overclocks for shit). I'd love to get my hands on an e5200 and if it did work with my mobo I'd probably pick it up and upgrade the mobo later for overclocking.

Any mobo recommendations?

I did this just because, and by running the E7200 compaired to the E2160, it is a big performance boost in everything of what this Pc has been doing. So, for me I think it IS a bennefit. BTW, I sold my E2160 (pc) to someone who needed it more than me.

Whats to debate? We geeks NEED to upgrade even when not needed. For this price I will replace an e2140 just for kicks . Plus, I wanna see how far the 45nm will OC .
