Hey this is my first post on this forum after looking at it for months now. I just made a new desktop, here's the basic specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Intel D965LCK Motherboard
2GB 5300 DDR2 (2x1GB) RAM
320GB SATA2 Hard Drive
Antec TX1050 Chassis
16X DVD ROM
Lite-On 16X DL DVD+/-RW Lightscribe Drive
256MB PNY nVidia 7600GT Video Card
MS Windows MCE 2005

I have all standard cooling in the case & components, and want to safely overclock my processor without adding any extra hardware. But, I will install any software I need to make it work. So, can someone tell me how to overclock it?

Welcome to Anandtech. (Well, not exactly a welcome since you've "been" here before)

As for overclocking, I have no clue. Lol, I'm just here to greet you!

Why didn't you ask before you buy the board? Your board is meant for stock speed EVERYTHING.

Not sure why you'd skip getting build advice here, & then come here for advice on OCing.

As mentioned, you're basically outta luck, since you purchased a motherboard not meant to...

Figure I'll hijack this instead of making another.

I've also purchased some parts and read some advice for purchases (within my budget) and am thinking I'd like to try and overclock this puppy. Will be my first overclock so any specifics to my setup would be helpful.

Mushkin EM PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-12 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit
Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 ATX LGA775 Conroe P965 DDR2 PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 GBLAN Audio Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 1.86GHZ 1066FSB 2MB Retail
ATI Radeon X800 XL 400MHZ 256MB 256BIT 1.0GHZ GDDR3 PCI-E VGA DVI-I TV-OUT Video Card

Those would be the relevant pieces I believe

Thanks.

There are two potential concerns with building a budget Core 2 Duo system. The first is availability, and hopefully we will have a clear answer on that subject in the near future. The other is motherboard cost. The ASUS P5W-DH we used in this article is currently the best overclocking motherboard we've seen for the socket 775 platform, but at $250 it is anything but cheap. We have seen quite a few of the P965 motherboards that can also overclock the budget Core 2 chips to reasonable levels, with prices hovering much closer to $140. Unfortunately, none of those boards can support SLI or CrossFire at present.
This is from the article about e6300 & e6400 overclocking. So why couldn't I overclcok my processor beacuse of my mobo?

From my understanding the Intel mobo is made to run the processor as is and doesn't offer the same options necessary to overclock properly. It's made to run it stock.

Ahh! That changes everything, the P5B has plenty of O/C options. The intel board you originally posted has none, thus the reponses you got

Please don't spread lies. If you don't know, say you don't know. My D975XBX OCs great. I am running my E6600 at 3.3GHz with almost everything at stock (had to overvolt the RAM by +0.1V). Now, I don't have the 965 MB but I suspect that it has a similar OC technology as mine. Intel is changing its thinking about the enthusiast and giving OCer's what they want is vital to being in that market. Just please give information not rumors. OK?

No...the 965 board is no overclocking options. The 975x board was specifically designed to enable that on a Intel board.

If Intel really wanted to allow overclocking they would release a major BIOS update that would let everyone use their Core 2 Duo boards to overclock, so Intel really doesn't care about overclockers IMO.

99% of the people who buy Intel motherboards have absolutely no interest in overclocking. In general, neither Intel nor AMD particularly care about overclockers.

?
Intel just released a BIOS for BadAxe that allows 400FSB w/ 1066 strap easily. (Previous wall around 360FSB) And their Extreme Edition CPUs are completely multiplier unlocked.

What's bad for OC'ing is their P965 board (NOT the chipset). Intel loves overclockers according to their PR reps.

Hi,
I'm trying to get my E6300 to 2.8GHz. I'm using:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
2 * 1 GB of GEIL PC6400 memory certified for 800 MHz
Gigabyte 965-DS3 MoBo
Seasonic 500W Power Supply
Zalman 9500 cooler
Connect3D Ati X1900XT graphics 512MB

A stable 2.3GHz system was easy...just up the FSB to 333MHz and up the VCore to 1.3V and it works fine.

To get to 2.8GHz is more difficult. Setting the FSB to 400MHz and upping Vcore a bit further is no good; the system doesn't even boot, just POST and then shuts down, resetting the BIOS parms to defaults in the process...then boots itself normally.

As this is my first overclock it seems there are a whole bunch of different things I could try, but a priority order would be nice...?

PS EasyTune5 doesn't work either - it doesn't display for some reason, even though the process is lurking in the background somewhere. has anyone else seen this behaviour? Suspect it might be due to a change from DirectX9 to DirectX10, but without 10 video download displays are in 16 colours!

Thanks....

Scrap the Intel and get a Gigabyte DQ6. I am at 3.5GHz (500FSB) dual prime stable for over 4 hours.

Oh also make sure your ram is good and can do atleast 1ghz. My Corsair 6400C4 is a champ and for a reasonable price too.

What BIOS version? I know the DS3 mobos had issues untill their last BIOS revision. Also the Gigabyte boards (really the 965 chipset boards) are very particular about memory. Make sure your memory is not the problem.

I have the DQ6 mobo running the 6300 @ 3.5GHz on a 500MHZ FSB. It took good ram to get there though.

I have some stability problems with my rig when trying to OC the E6300 over 2.8Ghz.
Any advice how could I get more out of my system?

My current settings are:
CPU Multiplier 7x
FSB 400MHz
PCI-E 85MHz
PCI 33MHz
Memory @ 1:1 4-4-4-12

Vcore 1,4V
Vmem 2,1V

My hardware is:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Asus P5W DH Deluxe (1201 BIOS)
2*1 GB G.Skill PC6400C4
Nexus 500W power
Scythe Ninja Plus cooler
GF 7950GX2

Lock your PCI-E to 100MHz
Also pump up your MCH volt to +.10 or +.15volts
