E6400: best mobo prepared for quad?

I am thinking of buying a e6400 next month. I´d like to buy a mobo prepared to hold a quad core when they are out and they become cheap.

Which is the best one? It would be nice if it would offer great oc capabilities. From what i have read i think i´d have the e6400 at 3,2 or so.

Any suggestion?

Thank you

I'm not sure but I believe the P5B-E is QuadCore ready. Just go to ASUS's website to look. It would be the better OCing mobo for the E6400 currently. If you want a mobo with more bells and whistles (features) then you could get a P5W DH mobo. It'll support QuadCore with a BIOS update. Another option to the P5W DH, but pricier, is the P5W64 WS Pro mobo. Its also QuadCore compatible and OCs better than the P5W DH. A third option (your best bet since you are talking about buying in November anyway) is to wait till mid/late November for all the new mobos expected to launch. I'm guessing many of them will be QuadCore compatible since Kentsfield launches around the same time.

P5B Deluxe, thats probably the best bet you have for overclocking too.
The 965's scale really really high... and they really arnt that expensive...

I don't have the link handy but someone over at XS also has a Kentsfield running on a P5B-Deluxe

In case i upgrade later to quad then what specs should the cpu cooler need? It would be twice as hot as a core 2 duo i suppose...

You want to overclock anyway ... so get a top end cooler.

Checkout the Cases and Cooling forum from some good advice there.

I've heard that even with high end air some people have been idle at 55c without any overclocking. High end air meaning Scythe/Thermalright/Tuniq

55 idle is high to be honest. I've got my 6300 OC'd to 3.0 ghz (with a Zalman 9500 though) and it runs @ 55C @ 100% load in dual Prime95 instances. Idle is 40C. And the stock HSF isn't that bad, so I can't see 55 idle.....maybe they doing something wrong with the thermal paste?

Guys that overclock for WRs screwing up their HSF install? Yeah right. Just face it...the wattage and heat is alot higher than a C2D.

This is really the mystery...What are the temps goind to be inthis first round of quad cores? From what I hear they will be quite warm, almost ala days of the the first Pentium D's...Dont expect much ocing headroom. I will likely try with my Ninza first and try some higher speed fans, but may have to migrate to WC like most...

I know some people on xtremesystems got them up past 3.8Ghz+ but didn't show temps and their builds were outside a case probably in a pretty cool room with tons of fans blowing all around the mobo/components. I've been shown screenshots of idle temps of 55c (load about 70c) with a kentsfield. Same system with an E6400 @ 3.4Ghz idles at 40c. it's a big difference.

I believe it....just looking at how INtels smithfields performed and using common sense as to the fact this is 2 C2d cores so obvioulsy the tDP is going to have to be way higher. Unless there are some better coolers coming out, we are all going to WC if we plan on ocing these things....

I personally think that the C2D can handle much higher temps than Intel states on paper. I think they're playing it safe with their numbers.

You work for Abit right?

I can name tons of C2D and Quad ready boards

RD600
NForce 680i
Gigabyte DS3, DQ6, DS4, S3
Asus P5B, P5B-E, P5b Deluxe, P5W-DH
Intel 975BX

do I need to continue?

Why? Is it cause you have one?

MOst of the gigabyte issues have been due to memory timings and thus have had little to do with C2D support. 2 rigs now and both installs were flawless...the tweaking of the ram was the issue and many of them got fixed with bios updates...

I'm using an MSI 975X Platinum PowerUp Edition. Worked great w/ my ES kentsfield. No issues, no BIOS update required, right out of the box.

So, if i buy now a c2d and overclock it with, lets say a Ninja...would this cooling work for the later NON-overvlocked quad? I think with the quad there will be no reason to oc, i´ll have enough power then.

I'm using a Big Typhoon with an overclocked quad. Temperatures are quite reasonable.
