..well I dowloaded TAT and it's reporting both cores at 24deg. (C) at idle with a room temp of aprox.72 deg(F).

That sounds pretty good (too good, actually), but I suggest that you try and compare your results with other temp monitoring tools, like CoreTemp and Speed Fan, as well as any monitoring utility your mobo might have come with.

..compares dead on with the DS3 health monitor at stock speed.

Mine (e6600@3.4g) is about 39c idle and 57c at full load (Prime95).
I currently use the AC pro 7 cooler.
The previous stock gave at least 6c-8c higher than AC7.

I have about 30-32 idle; 46-48 under load. These temps I've checked with CoreTemp
This was under stock settings for everything, hope it'll give you a good temp comparison

I am using an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 on a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 and cooled by an Asus Crux P5M2. I cannot really tell you about temperatures for full load but this is what I have experienced before and after 90 minutes of heavy gaming with all options enabled and some programs like Windows Live Messenger, InCD and all running in the background...

Before gaming (idle): 30 degrees Celsius
Just after gaming: 40 degrees Celsius

The temperatures were checked with EasyTune5 utility.

Very few people seem to mention their ambient temp.

I have a feeling that expecting some of these temperatures in a non-ac'ed room or hotter State is not realistic.

So many people see low temps and think something is wrong when their cpu idles at 50c in a 90ºc room.

I think this needs to be taken into consideration because it all depends on the type of chassis used and in what type of environment it has been placed.

..thanks for the replys. My room temp is mid 60's so it's no surprise why it's running so cool at idle and load (non overclock).

My room is mid-70's. Idle temps are 41 degrees and load temperatures are...well, I don't remember exactly but they're in the low 50's.

videopho, what voltage are you at? Voltage is possibly more important than clock frequency when comparing temperatures...

I also use an AC freezer 7 pro w/my E6600. 28-32C at idle, 42-45C at load. Room is probably about 75-80 deg.

The maximum temperature stated by Intel for the E6600 is 60.1 degrees celsius. So, any temperature beyond this limit should be considered as negative for the E6600. I never overclock my hardware and I also do not use power management schemes to do downclocks. Everything runs at stock speeds and as I said above, my CPU remains pretty constant around 30 degrees celsius at idle and the maximum it ever reached was 40 degrees celsius during a heavy gaming session.

What I can advise you if you are experiencing high temperatures is to check whether you have securely placed your cooler on the CPU (as described in your cooler's manual) and also to check whether you don't have some wires blocking the air flow around your CPU area. Moreover, make sure that you well define your fan settings in the monitoring software of your motherboard.

Let us say you have a cooler with 3000 RPM maximum. So, you can put the settings like this:

Minimum fan limit = 20% at 20 degrees celsius
Maximum fan limit = 100% at 50 degrees celsius

In fact, these are my own settings and I am pretty satisfied with the cooling results.

I'm getting 40~45 deg Celsius with my E6600 @ 2.4Ghz using the stock fan. The reason I asked about the temperature threshold was because I wasn't quite confident with my stock fan installation.

So, thanks for the info. I think the temperature is acceptable.

As far as I know, this is normal with the stock heat sink fan of the E6600. So, you should not be worried.

Not that idle temps are that important but doesn't it also matter if people have EIST/C1E enabled in the bios? It usually is on by default so if not disabled will show lower idle temps than someone with them disabled...
