What hardware do you have right now? You might be able to reuse your RAM in a DDR400 setup. Same for your video card...

With AMD's price cuts, you may want to seriously consider an X2 3800+ 939 setup if you have good RAM you want to reuse (the only case in which you'd go 939 - otherwise the AM2 will cost the same and DDR2 will be cheaper.)

There are some ASRock 865 motherboards claiming conroe compatibility and will be DDR/DDR2, AGP/PCI-e16 so there's lots of inexpensive options, evn if they're not the BEST overclockers (save you a hundred bucks though!)

Not a bad idea at all... though if you can hold on JUST TWO WEEKS..... prices will drop even more.

What kinda prices are you talking about? The 805 price or what ?

if i'm gonna get a Conroe, its got to be the E6600, cuz that's the sweet spot in Core 2 Duo.
i can't afford a new graphics card yet so i need AGP on the mobo.

I'm gonna go with the Intel Pentium D 805. I can't even afford the E6300 so the 805 will act as my budget bridge to Conroe.

No. When Conroe comes out, everything else will drop significantly (AMD like a rock coated with lead!)

Oh well...either way i'll be getting a monster (805) for under $100 so i don't mind...
Plus the release/price-drop will tie in exceptionally well with the exact time in which my budget ripens...

Monster 805 D? Hardly. Just because it overclocks well doesn't mean that it will perform well, especially compared to the Conroes.

I'm speaking from the point of view of my limited budget. There are a lot of things i need to change in my system (almost everything) so...805 is my best option (for now).
The E6300 is gonna cost ~$200, maybe more; D805 is gonna be under $100.
Plus IMO, to hit the "sweet spot" with Conroe....E6600 is the way to go...and that's gonna be like $350-$400.

I agree. The E6600 is probably the sweet spot and that's way out of your budget. However, patience is a virtue, and one that pays off! If you can hold out until you can get some more money then Conroe would be a great buy that will leave you satisfied for quite some time. On the other hand, you could always pick up and X2 which would also be much better.

But if you have gotta have it now then get the 805D and good luck to you!!!

I currently use an AMD Sempron 2200+ @ 1.5GHz (stock).
I overclocked it to 2500+ @ 1.8GHz (totally stable).

The X2 processors are the last of a dying breed (AMD)...for now. I don't think AMD will just roll over and die but anyway...
Intel was in my first comp...my dad bought me one for my birthday (the sempron) without knowing too much about comps...now back to INTEL....

With Conroe in mind...the 805 would be a better move for me now based on budget and a future upgrade to an E6600 when the prices come down a bit and stablize and my budget is nice and ready again for another CPU.

Back to the original question...
E6600 vs. D805...
Its obvious that the E6600 (Conroe) will smoke the D805 but...
On a limited budget...Is the D805 still the best way to go?

If you're still planning on using your 6600gt, I wouldn't upgrade CPU/mobo at this point. You're going to be fairly GPU limited anyway, so it's probably best to just save up the $ until you can upgrade your GPU as well.

I am in exactly the same situation as Cheex. Except, I would rather not overclock for warranty concerns (if there is a warranty).

Just out of curiousity, how good is a single core of a D805? Could it match an Athlon64 3000?

No way. The Athlon64 3000 will trounce a 2.66 ghz P4.

I was kinda hoping that -> costofD805+costofE6300InAprilNextYear < costofE6300thismonth . In hopes to save some $$.

But, I guess not.

Another question, how much better is the E6600 than the E6300 ? Like, are we talking marginal gains, or whopping performance?

Also, is it worth waiting for an NVidia-based chipset? (not interested in SLI)
