E6600 What is wrong here?

Followup thread, if you saw my first one you know a bit.


TEMPS MEASURED WITH: CoreTemp, TAT, Speedfan, BIOS. They all stayed around the same, comparatively.

I recently got an E6600 and with stock speeds and settings it was idlingat 50c.

So I get a Tuniq 120 and it drops the idle at stock speeds to 35c, which is pretty high for a tuniq without overclocking, and my loads would reach mid 50s.

So I RMA'd the E6600 and it came today. When I'm putting the tuniq on one of the ****** screw heads comes off, which Ive read about happening. I decide I'm done with the Tuniq's terrible mounting design and take the backplate off, and put the stock heatsink on.

New processor ,stock speeds, stock heatsink... and I'm still idling at 50c. I applied AS5, which I'm very comfortable with doing, and seated it properly... im pretty sure. It's all locked into place and looks steady.


What is going on here? What could cause temps like this? My ambient in my case never rises above 35c, and i idle at 29c ambient.

Is my motherboard bent or something? Could that even be a factor? Is there anything that would cause the temps to incorrectly report, consistantly? I'm stumped right now and I'm really really REALLY pissed off about the time, money, and sweat I've put into this system only to run into multiple issues like this.


I ordered a zalman 9700 to replace the tuniq and it should be here friday. I only pray my temps drop considerably, or I get some info from experts about what might be wrong.

35F is not so bad (F, right)

C2D chips with 4MB cache run hotter than the ones with 2MB cache

You might not have good airflow, or your PSU dumps more heat on your system than it should (Quality PSU?)

Your VGA can also be affecting this...

It's not just the CPU cooler (on air). It's the room temperature, case size, airflow, other components.

I have a thermaltake armor with the 25cm fan on the side. Airflow is not an issue, the PSU is a new idea I have not heard yet... but note that my temp jumps to 40c AS SOON as I boot up, from a cold state.

And yes, 35/38C with a Tuniq at stock is terrible.

Honestly I have a Tuniq Tower and I think it is one overrated POS. It is noisy and even at full speed I had high load temps despite multiple reseatings as well. I switched to water cooling. I don't understand how some people get such good results from it, I can only speculate that there is poor QC and some of us are getting units that are not built correctly. The close fin design also really needs a high flow fan that is hella noisy so it really is not for quiet computing at all. At low speeds it is very ineffective.

Also that thing is a b tch to remove with that stupid adhesive crap on the backplate. I've never used a computer component that was so poorly designed.

Scythe And Thermalright also use thermal pads to hold the backplate to the motherboard.

If you knew anything about CPU Coolers, you wouldn't think it was a tuniq only type of thing.

Zalman BTW, is the only company that claims being "quiet". All others are about performance and the tuniq is no exception. Nobody said it was quiet, just good.

Besides, with MOST actually saying how good their temperatures actually are after using the tuniq, you and your 2 friends are the only ones having problems.

Myself, I have used 2 Tuniq Towers with excellent results.

zalman ftw... im using a cnps7700 on my 6600 @ 3ghz, and it idles at 35, 45 at load.

35c idle and mid 50's load isn't bad for that chip. Maybe you are used to AMD chips that do tend to run cooler? At any rate you could probably drop temps some by lapping the IHS of the CPU since they tend to be concave, however this would void your warranty on the chip (for obvious reasons).

And for that sticky backplate thing on the tuniq, just don't take off the sticker backing and it won't stick to your board
