I noticed that after upgrading from Everest 4.00 to 4.20, it now reads the cores separately from the "CPU" and each is about 10c higher. Also, Everest began reading my GPU about 8-9c lower than it had with 4.00, and lower than AtiTool reads it. CPU-z also does not read the vCore; it always reads 1.150v no matter what the actual vCore. I think the software is more problematic than the diodes, due to variations in what is being reported by different software, but that's just a guess.

from what I've heard Intel is working hard on the C1 stepping since the current C0 stepping has quite a few errors. The temperature reading issues could be one of them. No C0 for me, I can wait.... keep in mind a non-working temp sensor might not be reason enough for a dealer to take a perfectly working CPU back.

Well, some (as I said) 8400's work as expected with all the various utilities, old and new..
So your theory goes right into the toilet
Based on what you said, yours is working properly, and the later everest is now giving updated info for the chip itself.
Peeps with far more knowledge than you or me have noted the prob - if you actually research some of the google linked articles.
While there might be some detection variation due to the chips newness - since the software writers lag a bit on new CPU versions - there is no explanation for a chip temp being stuck at 37 degrees permanent, or 14 degrees dif in temp of each core idling.

FWIW, coretemp is the most accurate reader of "real life" temps, per many threads on XS.
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Whats missing from this picture is folks noting WHICH batch codes are "good" and which are "bad". Or perhaps there are good and bad within batches.

It would be informative if the buyers here reported on their outcomes.

But if you install a known good Core2Duo HSF, there is really nothing to worry about, really - heh

bummer...despite having been "shipped" on Sunday (electronic notification to FedEx), it wasn't actually put into the shipping channel until today! :-(

I thought I had timed it perfectly...some other stuff arrived today and the rest (sans the processor) will be here tomorrow!

Oh well. These things happen. And it's still a good price!

The FedEx ground pickup didn't show up on Monday like it was supposed to. Express packages still made it out Monday though. . So, ground shipping orders placed Friday -> Monday night all shipped Tuesday

Well since they shipped Fedex and did not manage to get the package out Monday as their email to me said, I am now stuck waiting till I can go to the Fedex center 20 miles away this evening and hope the driver has returned before Fedex closes their doors for the night. They put signature required on the shipment and this means that even though I have a sig on file with Fedex. (so the driver would/could not leave the package) I have to sign for it in person. Sorry guys, it was a decent deal, but I really wish I had ordered from elsewhere. I would be using my chip instead of chasing it all over the county to try to take possession of it. If you tell a customer the package is on a 3 day shipment leaving on Monday, you should make sure that happens. I really wanted to help out a smaller shop by patronizing them, but instead I just got burned. I will have to take off of work early and use up some vacation time so I can go get the package. Or else wait till Monday and hope I can be home when the driver stealthily comes by..... Sorry for the bitching, but this just stinks!!!!!

I understand being upset, but:

1) The shipping being delayed was due to FedEx missing the pickup. I'm not trying to be obnoxious and shift blame, but unfortunately, this was something that was 100% beyond our control.

2) The signature requirement is a pain, I know, but we don't have a choice. It's also stated both in our policies page, on the shipping selection page, and again on the policies list you agree to at checkout. I'd happily drop the signature requirement if I could, but we honestly have no other option, due to the theft of packages off door steps, and the incredibly high rate of credit card fraud in this business.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my rant, but my level of frustration remains. I was able to convince Fedex to redeliver tomorrow so now I won't have to wait until Monday to try to catch the delivery ninjas. (also avoiding having to take off work to receive the package) Good luck in your future endeavors. Lesson learned on my part....

I'd also like to add my frustration with FedEx, although, I wasn't in a huge hurry for the CPU so I'm not too upset.

They initially tried to deliver the package yesterday, during the afternoon. Well, since I'm at work all day, I can't be home to sign for packages. No problem, I figured, I'd just call them up and schedule a pick-up and stop by the FedEx office 2 miles from my work on the way home. Well, it turns out, they can't ship the package there for me, since the shipping to my city runs out of another office 45 minutes away. If I wanted to pick up the package, they told me they could put in a request with the driver. They could not guarantee the package would be available though, since their drivers are subcontracted and often just drive their truck homes at night and finish delivering the next day. Well, how about delivering to my work? Nope, sorry, we can't deliver it to a commercial location because it's a residential delivery. So basically my only option is to have them deliver it Saturday (which is in their normal Tues-Sat time-frame, since when was it not Mon-Fri?) and hope that I'm awake early enough to hear the doorbell.

Now this is nothing at all against Tank Guys, and all about FedEx. I'm not sure what has happened with them, but I can't say that I'm impressed at all with their customer service. Maybe you guys should consider switching to UPS, if FedEx is just going to piss off customers.

Re: FedEx signatures
If you're just pissed because FedEx won't leave packages w/o your signature, the solution has been around for about 20 years: you sign a signature-waiver for FedEx to keep on file. There's no sig' requirement afterwards.

The down-side is that -you- are then responsible if someone steals it off your porch, or do you also have a complaint about accepting that responsibility? I didn't. I also adopted an idea I'd noticed somewhere: I placed one of those large plastic bench/storage-boxes by the door with signs on my doors for any packages to be placed inside that box; that way no one passing by knows I've packages awaiting my return -- unless they saw the delivery (or the package exceeds the bench size).

I am always have my computer parts delivered to my business address, which is in an industrial complex with 12 units.
So, in my usual flurry of "bargain buying", I am forced to deal with the usual suspects - FedEx UPS and DHL.
A package with RAM and a vidcard was thus sent out by the vendor to me by FedEx (no choice).
I always watch the tracking so that I can be here to avoid aggravation, so I knew the package was coming on a Wednesday.
Its a drisly rainy day and at about 7:15 in the morning (normally I wouldnt be there that early) and I think I hear someone knocking on the door. So I look out the window and I see no one.
A few minutes later I am going out the door and some guy way up in the front unit hollers out "oh, there you are".
He runs down to me and says "I left your package in the front unit - do you want me to get it?"
I say, "yeah, didn't you see the impress strip on my door to not leave packages with my neighbor"?
So he looks at the door and says "no I didnt"
Then I say, "why would you leave my package with a total stranger, and why would you let someone else sign for me"?
Guy's in a SUPER hurry, and starts to get real mad - looks like it may be fight time (something I would be happy to help him out with).
Remember, this is 7:15 in the A.M. and I would never expect a package to be delivered that early.
And there's no FedEx truck anywhere and no uniform on they guy other than a black or dark blue zipup jacket.
I have no idea whats going on actually.
So, I tell him to retrieve my package and bring it to me.
He says "you didnt answer when I knocked".
I reply "then leave a delivery attempt notice, right?"
So he runs like a maniac and gets my package, dumps it angrily in my hand gives me a dirty look and runs out into the street.
So I follow him to see that he runs halfway down the block to his truck - a small UHAUL!!!
It turns out the guy who signed for my package was one of the workers in that unit, speaks no English and assumed it was for them.
I'm sure that package would have sat there for a week.
And by now my box was all wet.
Having learned in this thread that FedEx contracts out their work explains a lot.

As for price spikes, etc., this is an annual event. Last couple weeks of Jan. always seems to be a good time to buy as prices are usually down. Then they start to go back up, normally due to inventory constraints/reductions (due to CNY shutdowns, also due to companies' adjusting their production schedules according to current economics, etc.).

However, when it comes to Intel CPUs, the CNY effect ought not apply, so best guess is they are trying to clear out excess Conroes (by keeping Wolfies somewhat constricted). Heaven knows these nice e-tailers wouldn't be playing games with us ...
