Seriously...$10? For a CPU...that will last years. Most people's bartabs average 7X that on any given night....I cant imagine stressing over $10 for something that is actually useful.

Sorry, but I'm anal over things like that (when I know I can get it for cheaper). I was the one grumbling when the 4870s were being sold for >$300 and I held out until I found one for MSRP.

I have next Friday off, so I'll see about dropping by MicroCenter in the morning.

I ordered an E8400 from newegg on Friday. I'll let y'all know if it's E0 stepping.

It was mentioned above, but the Microcenter in Houston had the E0 E8400s in stock (I saw about 7 or 8 more sitting in the cabinet next to the one I picked out - all small box E0s). They were stickered and marked @ $189.99 but did in fact ring up with $159. I can't wait to set this CPU free...

Intel Processor finder listed the E0 8400/8500 today. They should start showing up in volume at retail channels soon. TankGuys shows 9-3-08 ETA Guaranteed!

what OC can i expect with good air cooling [thermalright/scythe120], a ASUS Rampage and OCZ PC8500 with an e8600?

i just hate to pay the extra fifty bucks for a guaranteed e0

now we are in Q9550 price territory .. but i do not want to get stuck with 3.33Ghz - just for the "extra" 2 cores which are useless in 99% of games - what i have now; an e4300 @ 3.33Ghz .. it just does NOT cut it for 4870x2, never mind 4870x3

So I just got back from MicroCenter. They had about a half dozen E8400s locked inside the display case -- all C0s. Trying to sell off the old stock probably. I had to go grab a sales guy. He knew what I was interested in and went into the storage area to get an E0. Really nice CS guy btw - at the least the MicroCenter employees are competent. He mentioned that one of his coworkers got a 4.5GHz out of an E8400. Didn't remember what vCore the guy used though.

Some quicky CPU-Z specs (one hour OCCT). vCore is 1.23v. I'm going to have to wait for the weekend to do some real tweaking.

The stock heatsink isn't even half the height of a Conroe heatsink. No copper core either. Lousy cheapskates .

that depends. For a regular person, no. For you, just because you are even asking the question, maybe. You have upgrade-itis. You will read all the reasons why you should not upgrade, yet still try to convince yourself that you should...

Thank you Dr. Solog! I was mostly wondering if the overclocking possibility would be that much higher than the regular e8400. I'm new to overclocking so wasn't sure. Just getting ready to put together my new build, to justify the money spent on it my only upgrade path will be overclocking for the next couple years

What kind of OC do you have on your current E8400? I expect the E0 stepping to do between 4 and 4.5GHz on air. Of course some won't even make it to 4. Whether it is worth it or not is up to you. You should be able to get a decent amount for your current cpu so it won't cost that much. For those of us that like messing around with the computer as a hobby, probably. If you just expect larger results for the money you put in, probably not. Hey, I just bought a E7200 a few days ago and I'm already thinking of another cpu. Its still in the box!

I switched from a C0 to an E0 8400 (only had the C0 for a week). The C0 required like 1.4V to do 3.8GHz, which is outside my comfort zone for air cooling. The E0 does 4 GHz at <1.25V, and I've had it at 4.2 GHz, while staying below the Intel spec of 1.36V.

So in the case of someone like me that will just set a conservative voltage limit, and raise the FSB until the processor is no longer stable, an E0 can potentially overclock twice as much (1200 MHz on the E0 versus 600 MHz on the C0 when I set the voltage at 1.36). If you are willing to go nuts on voltage (due to excellent cooling or because you like to watch expensive things burn), then your 'Max' OC is probably only a couple hundred MHz higher with the E0.

Again, just my experience, so take it with a grain of salt.
