For those needing a CPU on the low end, they also have the AM2 Semperon LE-1250 for $34.99 - NewEgg has it for $49.99, and this is retail, so it includes the cooling fan.

I had a need to check my AM2 system against a possible bad CPU, so I picked one up. Luckily, I was able to use it for another system build (and the other system was a bad PSU, and my spare PSUs were bad, as well, ah well...)

Hey, if your ethics differ from mine, go ahead. I wouldn't feel right doing an RMA with Intel if I caused the damage by OCing.

Gee, how old are you ?

Old enough to discern right from wrong, apparently.

But if he got screwed by Intel - say hypothetically speaking they gave him a refurb CPU because there's no way he could tell it was a refurb and the truth eventually came out, no doubt he'd be screaming bloody murder.

These clowns think it's great to cheat and get away with it, but oddly enough they don't want to be cheated. Why is that?

damn, problem is nearest Microcenter is about 40 miles away, meaning it will cost me about $20 in gas, no longer making this a great deal

Amazon had it one day recently for ~$171 with free shipping without taxes for most. I'm waiting until the price drops at the end of the month. I may actually go for the E8500.

they also have a boxed 4600 for $99... i think this is kind of the goldilocks of the cache argument: not too little, not too much... oc's to 3.2 usually with small effort... although i have one that needed 1.4v just to get to 266fsb... great performance in pretty much everything at 3.2...

If you willing to cook them at 1.4+ volts you might.
The more cache the harder the oc.

From someone who has both...

E8400
- If you enjoy overclocking I'd go with the E8400. The Q6600 has been a mixed bag for OC.
- Unless you are doing video transcoding or running a bunch of VMs the overclocked E8400 will feel quicker.

Well I'll be darned - luck finally has gone my way for a change.

I live in upstate NY - no Microcenter nearby = no joy (in store only)

BUT..... We are taking a weekend trip to Washington DC this weekend (leaving this afternoon). We will be staying in Herndon, VA.
On a whim, I checked to see if Microcenter has a store nearby... lo and behold, the Fairfax VA store is LESS THAN A MILE from the Metro stop we will be using to go to DC! (Does Happy Dance)!

I ordered for in-store pickup and will grab it tomorrow on my return metro trip!

Gah, and I wasted a MS Cashback purchase buying an E8400! Oh well, good savings either way...

I'm confused - is this a quad or a duo? MC site says Quad - what gives?

the e8400 is most definitely a dual core cpu. it is NOT a quad.

Thanks for clearing that up - I received promo mail with the $149 price from them where they were describing it like this: "Intel® Boxed Core? 2 Quad Processor E8400". The MC site seems correct now however.

 it's a processor but ya gotta do whatever makes you happy.

Would this proc provide a significant boost over a 2140 and besides video encoding is the E8400 a better deal than the Q6600?

It's $150 in store pick-up only now. That comes to $162 out the door for me at the Santa Clara location. Tempting. Maybe next month.

And how much profit does Intel make !
Does the CEO lose any sleep on his private jet, or sleeping in his multi million dollar home?
Give me a break!
You can keep your ethics, I will warranty mine and sleep just fine.
