just got my e8400 in yesterday. i flashed my bios from F4 to F12f and then installed it.

my q6600 running at 3.4 idled at 35C or so, loaded it hit upper 60s. the e8400s cores are currently at 46 and 39 according to coretemp.

thought a dual 45nm would be cooler? whats going on here? is coretemp reading the temps right?

same voltage smaller footprint does not mean cooler chip. :T

but i haven't OC'd the 8400 and it runs hotter than the quad which had a pretty nice OC on it. somehow, a dual core that is running slower on less volts is running hotter than a quad core sucking more volts at a higher frequency.

that doesn't make sense...

oh if thats the case,

Then its reason #2.

Wolfdale's have a very wierd temp sensor. Same with yorkfields, which causes most temp monitoring programs to give off wrong readings.

download the newest coretemp or realtemp.

If you already did, then blah... i have no idea it should be cooler then your kentsfield.

yeah, i've got version 98.1. tried the 99 beta, but it showed my frequency as 0mhz and, so i went back to 98.1.

anyways, i'm kinda thinking maybe my HSF isn't mounted very tight, stupid pushpins. but i've ordered a bolt through kit from swc, so i'll update when i get that and see if it helps. i'm also going to check my cpu and see how flat it is, haven't lapped before, but it sounds doable.

YAY~ lapping!

however i doubt you'll see much benifit on a dualcore. :T

+1 on the mount, and +1 on pushpin's being stupid.

I had this problem too, I bought the E8400 just for shits, installed it, and temps were much higher at idle than the Q6600. This is on water, btw.

Idle temps for the Q66 were around 28*C after overclocking to ~3.4ghz.

Idle temps for a stock E8400, system identical otherwise, was 35*C both cores.

Load temps were pretty much the same for both, I'm guessing it's the watercooling (pretty new to it), load temps for both the Q and the E never got above 42*C, jumped back and forth on RealTemp between 36 and 42*C.

Something just didn't sit right with me regarding that, so I took it back and stuck with my nowadays super-reliable Q6600. I didn't care for the chip much after getting it this past Winter, but especially after doing the watercooling, and having it overclocked a full gigahertz while running weeell below stock air temps...is just lovely.

Aig, is there any point in going for the Q9300? Does it run cooler, hotter, what. Same temp probe problems as the E84/5s?

hmmm....well, i went and grabbed realtemp 2.5, and it it reading 10C lower than coretemp 98.1.

CT is showing 49 and 42 while RT is showing 39 and 32. RT's readings sound more reasonable to me. is it right?

dont like Q9300, its missing a quite a bit of cache.

Dont like the Q9450, the overclocking on it is too broad, meaning when it sucks, it seriously sucks, and when its good, its yummy good. [so very hard to get yummy good]

If i had to get a quad again, hands down without a second thought it would be a Q6700, if my budget was a bit bigger, a QX9650.

Assuming i didnt need SSE4. Which i still havent seen any benifit off it. :T

I got the same problem as you, i am reading in the high 40s and 50s for my E8400 too. I am thinking I am going to pick up some thermal paste tomorrow and seef that helps I ised coretemp to test.
