E8400 weird cooling patterns

Hey guys.

I have an Intel E8400 not yet overclocked, and a ZeroTherm Nirvana 120mm CPU cooler. When I read reviews, etc, it seems like people are able to get the temperature in the 20-30C area during idle. However, at idle my CPU temp stays at 33C, and has never gone below that. When under an application like UltimateDefrag 2008, it's average temperature for each core goes anywhere from 45-50C. I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.

Does anyone know why my temps can't go below 33C; I'm a little afraid as to how how it will get when I overclock.

Thanks!

My e8400 stays at 29C (core 0) and 34C (core 1) untill i load my cpu more than 50% (realtemp cool down test). I believe it's a common problem with these sensors getting stuck at low temps.

Ambient temp isn't the problem, sometimes I open my window and it's been about 30 +/- degrees outside in the past couple days.

My problem sounds similar to xingchen's; When idle it drops back to 6 multipliers and sticks at 33C each core.

Mine never goes over 58c with every utility I have used.Mine is stuck there. My mobo bios records it idle at 23c but when I start the pc the temp stays locked at 58c.

Seems to be a problem with these E8400 cpu's.I have my mobo set to emit the warning once the temp goes over 60c.It has never went over 60c and i have played cod waw for 5 hours straight on it with no problems,

Mine does go down to a 6x multiplier when I am not doing anything

Thanks Bman...that is pretty odd. I'll do some testing before and after I overclock to see if it gets too hot, and then report back here. Thanks everyone!

No problem man.I figure as long as you have a good cooler which is installed correctly and you have adequate air flow in your case then you are totally fine.

I was really paranoid at first with my build as this was my first complete pc build.I must of kept the case door off with the pc on its side for at least 5 hours since I wanted to see if I could feel a temp difference.

Also how is your fan running? Is it full speed all the time or is it set in your bios to speed up the fan when you start to hit certain temps?

Nah, I manually adjust the speed with a little controller it came with. There isn't really a difference for me if it's at 2200RPM or 1000RPM.
