I'm looking for a new car, and the Eagle Talon TSi (92-96) is a nice looking car. People either seem to love it or hate it. Everybody says it's a blast to drive, but repairs are expensive.

Do any of you have any experience with this car or alternatives that are about the same price/performance?

Thanks

Personally, I'd prefer it's twin sister the Eclipse GSX. Both are AWD & turbocharged, but the GSX looks better IMHO.

I wouldn't mind having one, hole shots would be a breeze.

I don't care for those years but the body style that followed is super sweet whith turbo. I love that sound! The new ones are ok but I would rather have a high-strung 4 then a low-strung 6.

the cars are pretty ugly, i mean generic.

the trannies blow up very easily.

The motors are great as long as you an into super-service. I mean really keep the motor in tune, otherwise they go to hell in a handbag quick. Dont buy one with any mods or without service records.

The tranny. really sucks. Folks thing cool. AWD lets launch them at 6000 rpm and haul ass. Well they all die.

i like them, even though all of the issues. Definitely buy one at a dealer and get a warranty on it. or you'll be kickin yourself when that tranny dies

Guess if I get one I'll stash a couple g's away for the tranny.

You guys know what the average lifespan on the engines is?

Aren't too many GSX's in Canada, since Mitsubishi doesn't sell cars
here. My father owns a 94 TSi AWD and he absolutely loves the car.
You apparently have to watch the timing belts on those cars closely,
because when they go, they tend to take other key components along
with it (ie. the turbo). They're really fast and handle great, but
the interior isn't too great and the manual shifter's position/size
really sucks.

The timing belt is no different than any other interference motor (ie honda). Replace every 50-60K religiously and have it done right , replace the tensioners too.

Most 16V engines will throw the valves into the pistons (new head, and likely new pistons) when the timing belt goes..

no different than any other modern multi-valve car..

i think that's the forums. they can be modified to be FAST, and i do mean FAST. but yeah they have tranny problems, something called "crankwalk", and lots of other problems associated with them. me, i'd stay away just because of the reliability. what good is a fast car if it's broken all the time?

Heh...a '91 Talon was my first new car after graduating college! That thing was such a BLAST to drive...and I was able to put on about 135K miles before it met its untimely demise (RIP). Make sure to read up on potential problems...the timing belt went on my Talon RIGHT before 60K (just a week before I was going to take it in to have replaced I recall). Fortunately there was a recall on the belt at the time so the rebuilt cylinder heads and valves were free!

That is incorrect. Crankwalk only occurs in 2nd gen DSM's (95-99). The 1st gen, which is the one we're talking about here, does not have that problem. Like everyone has said, those cars have transmission problems. However, if you don't go around racing everyone and dumping your clutch at insane RPM's and the previous owner didn't use it as a weekend racer, i think your transmission will be fine. Just make sure to check the compression of the engine and the turbo. If the seal on the turbo goes, it's at least $1k to fix. On a brighter note, the engine is capable of amazing powers. People have ran 11's on the stock turbo. the 1st gen turbo is larger than the 2nd gen turbo, thus you'll have more potential for power if modding is your thing. If you're into power and speed, this car will be awesome. otherwise, i'd get something that's more reliable.

The AWD versions are DAMN good cars for stoplight races.

LOL, I read a story about some guy in a souped eclipse GSX smoking a Z28, until his transmission exploded and he lost the race. I thought it might have been a fluke, but apparently not.
