This has been swept under the rug for many reasons.

Currently, non-OPEC nations have been at maximum production and will most likely peak as predicted. Figure 2 shows the projected worldwide oil production (based on analyses from the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas [ASPO]). Note that these are considered pessimistic projections. Others predict far higher production for the future, but discoveries to date have not born out the predictions of the optimists.

I'm not predicting that there is no replacement for cheap energy based upon easily extracted fossil fuel. It is a fact that even MSN, NPR, and NBC are reporting.

I am not predicting-and we aren't out of oil-we just reached the peak amount of oil the world can produce to meet demand. It'll be a few years before Americans will feel the pinch, but after it starts combined with the other huge events of the earth not being able to support 6-8 billion people there will be a dieoff. You just aren't thinking about it poopsnake.

It does NOT save resources, energy, or money, cut pollution, etc., unless it is Aluminum or Gold.

Recycling paper uses a LOT less energy than turning trees into paper, and it saves soil and vegetation obviously. The only reason recycled paper costs you more than non recycled is that paper mills are subsidized with free trees.
You mentioned aluminum and gold, but what about iron? You think there's no reason that almost all iron is recycled?

No, I am not a hippy by any means. In fact, I think too many people forget what the term "environment" actually means. Just because we make an environment inhospitable to life does not mean it is not an environment anymore. I.E. You cannot kill an environment.

Not sure what I am going to do for earth day, but my cynical side that renounces all made up holidays is probably not going to care.
