I got one of these, too. Anyone here have any opinions on earthlink DSL? Do they give you a static?

When you say "High Speed", what do you mean? Not every DSL connection is the same. Even the same provider usually has a few plans.
My friend who has a 56k modem would call 200kbps download High Speed. But I won't call High Speed if it's under 1 Meg.

from what i understand, it's ADSL, 1.5Mbps down/256kps up, but since it's adsl, speed will vary accordingly. Around here, they gaurantee 256kps down/128 up (someone else who had it told me this).

Raju420, unless yours is different from the one I received (I doubt it since since the promo code is the same), there's an * after "$39.95 a month". They charge a one-time $99 DSL setup fee. Also the contract length is six months.

I'm getting 1,200 kbps from Earthlink.

Isn't this just their regular deal? My friend signed up about 3 months ago and got this exact same package without mentioning a code of any kind. His adsl is 384/1.5, pretty good for it's price but the wait period to install is pretty long (1-2 months)

Let's not confuse BITS and BYTES here. The providers give specs in bits to give the appearance of larger numbers. Windows will report download bandwidth in bytes, however. 1 byte = 8 bits.

From what I've heard Cable is better, you can usually get on faster and it's available pretty much everywhere. The difference is with DSL you get a dedicated connection while with Cable you have to share it with a neighborhood, could get slow sometimes, but I think I'd rather go with Cable.

Still though if you're getting DSL this is a pretty good price, with free DSL modem (usually upwards of $100) and installation, although a free personal firewall can easily be had from ZoneAlarm.com.

Isn't that earthlink's regular deal? we got free installation and modem for $40/mo. w/o a special promotion. BTW- it's a PPPoE connection.

Mindspring/Earthlink DSL offers 1.5 Mbps/384(or there about)kbps which turns out to be 188kBps/48kBps. 56k modem would ideally get you around 7kBps if you're comparing.

I have this service and i usually get 1300kbps(162kBps)down and 350kbps (45kBps) up.
Great service for $39.95 with minimal downtime.

Edit: CarpeDeo(Seize God? - I take it to mean Receive Jesus as your Savior?), you've beat me to it

Earthlink is better than VERIZON but sorry no static ip.
Telocity is probably the best if you dont want contract. $49.99

I had flashcom now i am just waiting for lazy verizon to install a new circuit only took them 3 months so far and i am still waiting first time was so much faster.

VERIZON IS THE WORST.

Just my .02c

I also have @home through ATT...trial acct. did you tweak your machine, shiznut? Because that's what i got when i didn't tweak my PC. Afterwards, i get 3500~5000kbps down... and 122kbps up(ouch!)

I don't want to get into a pissing match with anyone, but cable is definately better than DSL.

1. Most DSL' are DHCP (Dynamic IP, your IP will chang eevery so often, for the newbies) This may or may not matter to you, it does to me.

2. Speed is oh so much faster on cable than what Earthlink is offering.
(This also does vary, Sprint ION is also offering Earthlink as an ISP, they are calling this DSL also, which it is not) See Sprint' web site for more info on ION)

3. Just my .02.

On the Earthlink DSL I get 150 KB/S down and 40 up all the time with sub 50ms pings. With a cable modem it is great when it is a new node but watch out as they add people. Don't beleive me, you will. In my area I have seen new nodes start at 5000 down, about 500 kb/s go to 100 kb/s, not bad but sucks when you used to go a lot faster. I chose DSL for low ping and the exact amount of bandwidth I am paying for, however in recent months Mindspring...I mean Earthlink went from promising 1.5 down to only promising 256 down. If you do soley downloading I would go cable, if you like to do a mix of stuff and gaming go DSL. Check dslreports for your area and see what is around, also check the cable modem chats for your area to see how bad your node is being used.

FINALLY got my earthlink DSL hooked up a few weeks ago nad have been pretty happy since. THe wait was such a hassle. I almost cancelled the order. RIght now, i'm getting speeds of about 1.5 mbps. I even went to a couple of sites Earthlink had recommended for speed tests and got well over 1.5. Is that possible? check out www.speed411.com and tell me if this place is accurate or not. RIght now, i'm paying $40/month with no installation fees. I didn't need any promotion codes. Just mention the offer and they'll just give it to you without any hassle.

It could be a good deal. If you can't get cable or you know that there are alot of users already on your node. You can ask the cable company for info. Fortunately, I am in a neighborhood that has alot senior citizens and the other people can hardly afford cable tv or a pc for that matter. I am one of 12 people on my node. Earthlink is a good provider. I used them for 3 years on dialup. My uploads are still uncapped because of the low bandwidth usage. My uploads are supposed to be capped at 128, but I regularly get 2 to 3 times that number. My dl top out at around 3000. I used to be a big DSL advocate until I moved out of DSL area. Now I am a true cable fan. Hey, anything is better than dialup!

This is from Sprints' web site on ION:

Sprint ION is an entirely new experience in home communications. Everything working together through unique "infused" technology. Available only from Sprint. Sprint ION service will be delivered to your home over ADSL technology, providing dedicated downstream rates of up to 8Mbps and upstream rates up to 1Mbps. Local voice (up to four lines), long-distance calling, and broadband Internet connectivity will be carried via Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) to ensure superior service.

Your home will be connected to the Sprint ION network via the Sprint ION Hub, a "universal translator" which will receive, process and route all types of traffic (analog, digital, ATM, video, etc.)

If you notice they do say ADSL technology but carried via ATM. Much different than "regular" DSL

They offer the following services:

Sprint ION
Sprint FastConnect DSL and
Sprint Broadband Direct

all the same but.......different. Check out their web page for more info.

Damndest thing about them (SprintION) too....I keep getting flyers on my door and mailings from them offering me services. But they can't. I am too far away from the CO....you would think they would know this by my address, but nope. I get at least 3 a month. I would love to get ION, a friend has it and they actually rewire your house (all phone lines up to 4) with Cat 5. The "hub" is like a router, but not quite. It has outputs for RJ11 and RJ45. Pretty slick setup.
