I've had Earthlink/Mindspring up in Buffalo for like 5 months... took less than 2 weeks for installation (and this is without the do-it-yourself kit) and went down only once for an hour. I consistently get 1.3 mbps downloads, but I well exceed that when I download from the nearby University campus computers. Nearby cable users have told me they experience many outages and slowdowns, and only average around 800 kbps. Maybe because there is a high density of cable modems in my neighborhood. I'm totally down w/ my DSL up in dis piece, homeboy.

Zwingle:

1. Concerning DHCP and dymanic IP address. It's common for both cable modem and DSL providers to offer only dymanic IP on the basic plan. With DSL, you have the option of going with enhanced plans that have static IP(s). I'm not sure if there exists residentual cable modem plans with static IP(s).

2. Speed. Cable modem has a higher potential peak bandwidth but the drawback is that the throughput can vary a lot depending on number of users on the same segment and usage. I have friends who live in the same neighborhood but one street over. One friend has exceptional up/down throughput whereas the other friend is significantly slower and sometimes to the point of being slower than 53K modem.

3. Sprint ION is DSL. DSL can be offered in one of two forms, PPP-over-Ethernet or PPP-over-ATM. Either way it's still DSL. My DSL provider PacBell offers both PPPoA (which I have and is the original basic plan) and also PPPoE with new basic plan.

Damn Mindspring, I put in my order since September 2000 and guess what I am still waiting for my damn installation kid and for them to provision my phone line. I give up calling them already. Everytime I call they either lost my order or they have system problems. This is an on going thing for over 4 months already. They escalated to managers couple of times and still nothing is done. Thank goodness I didn't get bill for it yet otherwise I'll flip out!

I wonder who the dolt is from PC magazine that wrote this article.
PC MAG article

<< For comparison, the average actual throughput of a 56K modem is 5 Kbps. >>

ROFL

it also says the highest performer in the group tops out at about 90 kilobits per second.

Be patient if you order this (depending on area I guess). Been waiting for the hardware for over a month and signed up first week of Nov. Line has been ready for weeks.

Also be sure to get your personal info right, out of the three people I know who signed up all three had their info entered incorrectly which delays the whole hookup. They won't email you stating there is a problem either so stay on top of it.

Its a decent deal but just don't expect to have it running the first month or even 2nd.

Am I the only one who has sucky DSL connection through Earthlink? I signed up getting an @earthlink.net account and the provider I get is Verizon (sucks). I heard that if you sign up with an @mindspring.com account, your provider would be covad, which gives better support and faster connections. Is there anyone here with an @earthlink.net account who gets 1.3Mbps downloads? I think I should be able to do better than my current 600kbps downloads since I'm not that far from my CO (it's a little over 6000 ft from the CO) and the quality of my line isn't so bad I don't think...

I prefer cable. I get peaks of 4.5Mbits down and very consistently in the 2 to 3 Mbits down all for 29.99 month he in the northern suburbs of Atlanta with Aldelphia Cable.

Not to mention that I have had this service for more than 2 years now.

I'm very upset with earthlink, they keep delaying my installation, I had to cancel them. They kept delaying that for like 6 months. They keep saying something new like my phone line is on hold, my order is lost or something else. I just got pissed and went with verizon instead. It's much better if you think about it.

Cable vs. DSL

The whole argument/.02cents is useless. Whichever plan/company will give you the most bandwidth and service, better contract/lack there of, in your area, will determine which better.

Its based on where you live and the what the variables are based on who services your area. In some areas, like mine cable blows. In some areas people can't even get dsl, so dsl blows.

Some people dont have access to either, or they are severely limited, so they both blow. And yet others, get huge connections, and a static ip, for "almost nothing" (relative term), so it "rocks". That is the logic, essentially of this useless arguement.

Cable and DSL don't rock, or blow, in and of themselves, the area you live in decides whether they rock or blow. Making the generalization that one is better than the other, from a consumer standpoint, makes absolutlely no sense.

I had Earthlink and can't say I was verry happy. They are happy to charge you, but they don't deliver. I had "Unlimited" service, but they seemed to interpret this as "As much service as we feel like giving you while we rake in the dough." I do use the internet a lot and I download a lot of binaries and disk images. They did start to limit my bandwidth and removed my access to their news server with no notice. You have been warned.

People can be so lame.

Anything that is faster than 56k is great. I cant get cable, but when dsl came out I got it. There are so many variables on your speed there is no way to argue which is better. Some cable users have limiters on their speed, some DSL co's have static IPs (like mine, $2.50 per additional IP, ROCKS) And I am through GTE (now verizon). I get my max on both ends 768/128. If you can though, I would get cable. Unless it has a limiter. It can download and upload faster. But when everyone starts getting it, you may want to switch to dsl. DSL will get faster as time goes on, as it can go up to 8meg. But nothing beats the OC12 I am on right now.

A couple things about the ION program

1. The only way it is DSL is through the house to the PBX after that they set you one their SONNET and B-MAN networks this is faster than any dsl connection. Hence the 6 - 8 Megs D/L

2. the everything that has a fone line runs on this box that is why it has both RJ-11 and RJ-45 connections four connections for the 11's and 2 for the 45's so you can directly hook computers up etc ... you all can think of the possiblities

3. the fun thing is you can access everything for your fone from ION as well such as turning on call forwarding when ever you would like caller id, call waitting etc which makes it very nice

I would LOVE to get a hold of this stuff like you would not believe !!!!

i got these prices last month w/o a code. im pretty sure its the normal price. i had signed with earthlink only because theyre the shortest contract i could find. $39.99/mo, 6mo, free install, free modem (at end of contract). Covad installed and since they saw my setup already had a nic the dude tried to leave saying i dont get a Nic. make sure you ask for it or theyll keep it...

My mistake is that i allowed them to give me a mindspring address. Dont get anything but an earthlink address ifyou are signing up because mindspring support is done seperately from earthlink so you cant call regular support, PLUS they killed mindsprings website so theres no web support either.

I have Earthlink DSL and experienced many of the same issues getting the install kit that others have mentioned. Also, the software install was unstable for a long time and I had to do some work on my PC. The program didn't properly install WinPoet. After all that hassle, it's been running well and been reliable. We just recently (after I started) got cable access in this area. We also had earthlink prior to getting dsl, so it was nice to keep the same email addy.

When I had EarthLink DSL, it was pathetic. Averaged 50KB/sec down and 10KB/sec up, averaging 90-120ms pings.. With cable, I see 190-220KB/sec down and 36KB/sec up on a regular basis, and I ping 14-30ms to all servers in California, some in Arizona and Oregon, 80-110ms to the east coast.

In my experience, EL completely sucks.

My 2 bucks

j4ckhAir,

I agree completely. Either technology can be better than the other based on the implementation by the company providing the service.

For me, I do have an option and the better one is Cable both in price and bandwidth. On the other hand, just a few miles away, another cable company is offering broadband and I have heard nothing but complaints about them... in that case DSL would be the wiser choice.

I got Earthlink's DSL last summer because it was the only high speed option available. It took about two months to get it installed, but once it was in it was perfect. I haven't had one second of down time in 6 months. My Dad got @home on January 4th and it's already gone down twice, once for about 24 hours. My ping rates are a little high (100+), but that's the only drawback. Otherwise I average about 120KB/sec down. I was going to switch to cable now that it's available but sounds like it goes down and slows down a lot. If it ain't broke...

Anyway my $.02 is a recommendation for Earthlink, if anyone cares...

Every farking time this kinda deal comes up here come the supposed experts on which is better.

AND I BET it goes right down the line of what each has.... ENOUGH with the childish MINE IS BETTER THAN YOURS argument. There are plenty of sites out there from REAL EXPERTS that give the pros and cons of both, and the BOTH have pros and cons.
