Earthlink DSL or Cable $29.95 for Six Months.

So is it really Earthlink cable cap their newsgroup? I am planning to switch from RR in nyc, because TWRR newsgroup are massively in-complete. But they are fast. The reason i planning to swtich is because of newsgroup. If Earthlink cap it, there is no point for me to switch then.

Can more Earthlink cable verifiy whether the newsgroup is capped?

Can anyone confirm that I am allowed to cancel after 3 months? I will be returning to college then, and my parents do not need high speed access for what they use the internet for(mainly email), and have a dial up number/account for free with work.

So I just need to buy a cable modem, and then contact earthlink and sign up? Can I just install the equipment myself since I know what I'm doing if I can build computers and set up networks?

Any questions that aren't answered at the link in my first post can probably be resolved at their toll free info number, (800) 817-5508 (from their contact page).

Of course, there's always the possiblity that your parents may actually find enough to enjoy on broadband that they want to keep it, at least for the remainder of the six months @ $29.95.

Regarding Earthlink DSL, is there any cap? I heard somewhere 200MB per day download limit, this was from a n00b and maybe they had a "budget" plan not the %49.99/mo plan.

Any download caps you guys are aware of or hidden strings besides the 1 year committment?

I checked my speed, yesterday through DSL Reports and got 641/132 Earthlink through Verizon Telco in L.A. If that's a cap, it isn't bad. I'm not using a router, but the DSL modem they sent connects to my T10/100 NIC. I'm sure their service reps will answer all of your questions.

The bad news is, today is one of those that Verizon's DSL connect is down. The good news is, one call to Earthlink's customer support verified the problem, and they have noted my account so I will not be charged if I exceed the 20 hr. limit on dial up until Verizon takes care of their mess.

When I say cap I mean maximimum bandwidth per day, like you cannot exceed 200MB downloads per day.

Speedwise as long as it's 640k or higher I'm happy since that's what I'm currently getting.

There is NO commitment for cable service. The one year commitment for DSL applies only to getting the DSL modem free. If you drop out before then, they bill you for the modem, but that's all.

The router has nothing to do with the DSL modem, except that, in a network setup, your DSL modem receives the incoming signal a feeds the router which, in turn, feeds the machines on the network. I think the only requirement would be that the router uses the same protocol as the DSL modem (T10/100, USB, firewire, etc.) or has a translation system from one to another.

actually, i looked up on that and here's what i found:

EarthLink is providing equipment to you for your use of the Service. Cancellation, downgrading or changing (to Dial up, Basic aDSL, Cable, Satellite, etc.) the Service by you before the initial term of the agreement ends will result in a $149.95 charge. If you move service to a new residence or switch phone lines within the same residence during the initial term, you will be charged $149.95. If EarthLink can provide a broadband service Service at the new residence or on the new line, EarthLink will issue a $99.95 credit (aDSL or Satellite) or a $99.95 refund (Cable) to your account providing you renew for another 12 months within 60 days from the time you terminated service at your old residence.

edit: this regards the DSL service only. cable would be nice, but my area isn't lined with fiber optics yet

I live in the San Gabriel/Pomona area and I get good speed from Earthlink/Covad DSL: 1300-ish kbps down and 300kbps up throughout.

I have a laptop that I leave running for months at a time; Earthlink/Covad DSL _very_ rarely disconnects. I pay $50 a month, because I don't want to commit to another one year contract.

I recommend Earthlink because has been reliable and speedy for me. My girlfriend is getting DSLExtreme's service next week, supposedly another awesome DSL isp.

Bellsouth has a similar deal now and I know their newsgroups are reliable and no cap (or at least I never encountered one). Their deal is actually slightly better for DSL only.

I've had Earthlink DSL (previously Mindspring) provisioned through Covad since 2000. I get 1500 down/ 384 up. Rossman, Earthlink does not place a cap on downloads. I download usually over 5 gb per day (yes I know thats alot). Earthlink's regular newsserver is slow, but their beta/test newsserver is fast. Has good completion rates and rention is almost a week. All around their server is good. I have been down a couple of times since 2000 (911, and couple of other things). Usually they fixed things fast. If you are in NYC and you have Covad in your area ask to be provision by Covad. That way you will get the full speed provided. Earthlink through Verizon only gives you half the speed, around 750 down/128 up.

Comcast is running a promotion at $30 a month for 3 months. Compare to $30 for six month with Earthlink. I am going back home from college soon (no more t3 line ) and i need the internet for about three months, until i go back to school. My question is, should i go comacast or earthlink?
