I have Time Warner Cable high speed internet in Houston, TX. A family member got a postcard from Earthlink for $29.95/mo for 6 mos. through TWC. $41.95 thereafter, TWC charges $44.95. So I called TWC, my billing ends on the 15th. They say I should call back on the 16th to download Earthlink. So I save $75 total for 6 mos. Who knows, might switch to SBC or somebody else after that. Back & forth we go.

I went to Best Buy today to check out the Earthlink deals, both DSL & cable deals need 12 month agreements. :frown:

FWIW ... I ordered on 5/27 and the due date for Earthlink was 5/29. Shortly after midnight on 5/29, my Bellsouth FastAccess connection went down. At 12:40am, I was up and surfing on Earthlink. Smooth sailing ever since then!

Not true. Earthlink cable thru Time Warner Cable has no 12 months commitment. $29.99/mo. for 6 months (promo code 15913), not at Best Buy.

I have done a LOT of research on this deal and there are three ways you can get in on it. I am currently on dial-up (please don't laugh because I am not). I really want to move to broadband but I have been waiting for a LONG time just for a deal like this. Here is how it appears to work:

1. You can go through Earthlink for the $29.95 for 6 months, $41.95 thereafter (NO COMMITMENT), or

2. You can go through Best Buy for the same as above but you get a $50 or so gift card for signin up through them, or

3. You can go through Dell and get a $75 rebate for signing up through them.


I called Dell the other night and talked to a knowledgeable CSR who read through all of the terms/conditions. You have NO commitment on this deal, you can walk at any time.


The deal is good through the end of July.

You're referring to CABLE not DSL, right? Because DSL is $49.95 per month after the first 6 months not $41.95.

That is correct. In my ZIP I can sign up for $29.95 per month for 6 months then $41.95 thereafter. In other areas I do not know (but I think this is pretty standard - unless the area has a lot of competition). Remember, this is the BASIC deal. You can go through WorstBuy (I mean BestBuy) and get their GC OR you can go for the $75 cash rebate from Dell. I was so interested in this that I almost signed up on the spot but I realized that since I plan on keeping the plan for 6 months, then probably cancelling I would lose my connection right before my 2 week break during the holidays. Since the deal does not end until 29 July (through Dell) I will probably wait until early July to sign up. The ZOOm, Zoom .....

The 20 gb caps is on the download speed, after 20 gB speed goes down to about 24000 kbps. :disgust:

I haven't used the earthlink server for months because of the issues of incomplete post (headers), speed and retention. So I'm using UseNetServer at $14.95, no caps, no GB limit.

With Earthlink, just the usenet/newsgroups on my experience. Not really happy about the current status of Earthlinks beta server.

That's why I use UseNetServer from my downloads for $14.95/month. I could leave my computer on and download 24/7 @ 1345 kbps, if I wanted to. That's about 12GB/day which I did once.

This deal isn't that great.

I don't know if this is a nation wide thing. But think about this.

The price structure for Time Warner is 82$ for Digital Cable and Road runner.
For Road runner by itself is 49$ per month. Digital cable is 60$ per month. Totally worth it to get the combo deal.

The earth link deal of 29.99$ for 6 months, or roughly 180$ and then 49.99 for 6 months is $300 Or a total of $480 a year. (There is no cancelation (without a fine) for this deal and a 1 year contract)

The problem is if you have normal digital cable they charge you 60$ for it by itself. 60$ and 30$ is 90$ or after six months, 60 and 50, or 110$

For me 82$ is high but better than the alternatie. Maybe if it was 6 months free, then it might be worth it.

I live in a Time Warner / Roadrunner market than has been recently hit by the new "15GB per month limit" imposed by Roadrunner. This is a new test marketing plan that Roadrunner is currently trying out in 3 markets. I was paying $45 a month for unlimited cable internet access. But now, I am limited to only 15GB per month of data transfer (downloads/uploads). If I go over 15GB per month, I have to pay $15 for every extra 5GB. (I hear that they may go national with this new pricing plan eventually).

They offered me the new "Roadrunner Extreme" service which costs $99 a month for 40GB of traffic.

This is totally unacceptable to me, so I called Earthlink to see if their cable internet service is unlimited. Guess what? It is capped at 10GB per month. I had to go through several customer service reps and managers, but they finally admitted that there is a 10GB per month limit for their cable service. There is NOTHING on their website that mentions this limit, but if you call Earthlink and ask to speak to a supervisor/manager they will tell you about the limit.

I have never heard any Earthlink cable users mention this 10GB limit, so I wonder if it is only enforced in certain markets? I asked what would happen if I went over the 10GB limit. They said my service would completely stop for the month, but resume the next month.

Before you sign up with Earthlink or Roadrunner, call and ask to speak to a supervisor/manager, etc. You may want to think twice before you subscribe to their so-called "unlimited" services.

Hmm isn't regular TWC 3Mbits down and also about 384K up? I'm sure it's over 2Mbps down because I'm on it right now and I can get downloads at 300K, or high end 200's, which end up counting up over 2Mbps...and that's not even factoring in overhead.

I know exactly what you mean man, TWCNYC has the worst newsgroup servers as far as completeness goes, I've NEVER EVER EVER seen a file that actually had all it's parts. Then again, I basically don't go on newsgroup servers anymore because of that, since there's just no point when you can't read half the messages(like you'll see all the RE: messages, but no matter how far back you look there won't be the original message), and for files it's just a waste of time since you'll NEVER get all the parts.

If earthlink has capped servers, that basically means there's no good way to get newsgroups from a cable provider for me(Optimum can't install where RR is, heh), other than just paying a 3rd party news server.

I live in the Triad area of North Carolina. I pay $45 a month for Roadrunner (it is cheaper because I also have digital cable).

This is one of 3 test markets for this new pricing scheme (more like pricing scam). The other 2 markets are in Ohio and Nebraska.

I thought Earthlink would be a good alternative, but their bandwidth cap is even LOWER (10GB a month).

Call Earthlink and ask questions. The basic customer service reps will tell you it is "unlimited". Ask to speak someone higher up and they will tell you 10GB a month.

I was told that in some markets, the limit is imposed by the cable company. But after speaking to several higher-ups at Earthlink, I was told there IS a 10GB per month limit. Call Earthlink and ask to speak to someone above the CSR level (or ask the CSR to speak to their supervisor).

SBC DSL is the DEAL, until June 30th, new and current DSL subscribers get $29.95/month for a whole year, if they sign up for a year contract. You just can't be currently locked into a contract! This is for N. California for sure, a bunch of us called up and got changed over from $50/month!

OK, I have been on a number of boards reading of all the concerns about "caps" to your downloading pleasure. For me, this is a great deal. After dropping my current ISP and figuring in the rebate it will cost me about $18 a month for the first 3 months, $29.95 for the next 3, then $42 thereafter. The KEY here is that there are no COMMITMENTS. Some individuals have had the on-line equivalent of a stroke over the fact that Earthlink or RR might have a "cap". So be it. I like to download like everyone else but I am not going to pass on a no-commitment deal like this just because there MIGHT be a cap. If you sign up and find that there is a cap, all you do is cancel the first month. The net effect is that you received a month of service plus made $$$ ($75 rebate - $29.95 monthly service = about $45 net profit). I hope there is no cap and after reading threads on numerous boards I have yet to see ANY complaints of capping ON ANY BOARD. Perhaps this is a new corporate policy, a policy that will end up hurting EL in the long run.

Most of the "deals" on these boards are YMMV. I thank everyone who had the consideration to post their concerns about the possibility of a cap. We have been warned. I for one will be jumping on this mighty soon .....
