I have a couple of questions for those of you who were Time Warner Cable Modem subscribers, and who switched over to Earthlink.

1. Do I contact Time Warner Cable first to cancel my account, or Earthlink first to sign up?

2. Do I actually have to return my cable modem to Time Warner (under the TWC account), then get new equipment for Earthlink/Time Warner?

Basically, I am trying to figure out how the transition process works. I am currently paying $45 a month on top of cable TV, so I am looking forward to switch over to Earthlink. Thanks to anyone who can clarify this.

I kept my existing modem - I called Earthlink and spoke with a rep - they called Comcast with me on the phone.

The Comcast rep walked me thru the procedure - basic stuff - rebooted PC and that was it.

Bye Bye Comcast (although my bill is still issued thru Comcast).

I just switched from Earthlink DSL to SBC Yahoo DSL. I was paying $49.95 for Earthlink DSL. SBC Yahoo charges $34.95. I think SBC or Verizon's $34.95 DSL service is a better deal:

1. If you sign up for a year, Earthlink charges $29.95 * 6 + $49.95 * 6 = $540 with free modem
SBC / Verizon charges $34.95 * 12 = $420 with free modem. You also get a $75 Best Buy gift card if you sign up at Best Buy B&M. (It's not on their website.) You can also sign up via Dell if they list SBC / Verizon in the availability list (not in my case).

2. You don't need to install the Yahoo browser if you don't want to. In fact, you don't need to install *any software at all* if you have a broadband router that can handle PPPoE connection, like the Linksys BEFSR41. See this faq on dslreports:

If you don't install the software, you don't have to worry about Yahoo tracking your internet activity.

3. You'll get the same speed either way (Earthlink or SBC) since the line between your home and the central office is owned by the telco and regardless of which provider you go with, the line is leased from the telco anyways. I get 1300/137 with SBC which is about what I used to get with Earthlink/Covad also.

4. Contrary to what I've read on newsgroups, the SBC Yahoo mail and news servers are pretty fast, definitely faster than what I previously had with Earthlink. I live in Bay Area, California and I'm talking about the servers pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com and news.sf.sbcglobal.com.

Overall, I've been extremely satisfied with my new SBC Yahoo DSL service so far, and the 15 bucks I save each month when compared to Earthlink.

The same is true for the Earthlink browser, and my system works with a POP3 mail setup. It's just an ugly overlay to IE that takes up more resources on your system.

Earthlink's price includes 20 hrs/month free dial up so you can stay connected if your DSL goes down. I can't say enough good about my experiences with Earthlink tech support. My telco is Verizon < sigh >, and their part of the DSL system has gone down a couple of times. When I called Earthlink and verified where the problem was, they placed a note in my account so I would not be charged anything if I had to exceed the 20 hour limit due to the DSL outage, even though it wasn't their fault. Also, I usually start by letting them know I'm an experienced user, and I've already gone through the basic checklist, and they cut to the chase instead of going through thier whole script before dealing with the actual problem.

If you have SBC or PacBell DSL you should also be able to get it for $29.95 if you agree to a one-year extension of your current service.

SBC's DSL service comes with unlimited dialup access too. Comes in handy when the DSL goes down, as Harvey mentions. It'll also be helpful when you travel with your notebook. They have local access numbers throughout the US.

Does Earthlink have any download caps or anything weird I should know about? I once heard about a 200MB per day limit, maybe that was another ISP?

What are the down/upload speeds for Earthlink DSL.

Yes. DSL service, itself, is provided by your local telco. Earthlink, or any other company other than your local telco, provide the rest of the services for your account such as e-mail, tech support, and billing.

I have Earthlink cable and I had switched from Time Warner Road Runner 6 months ago. It is the same in every way except the news servers are capped at 56k. Yes dial up speed. I called cs and they told me that and it seems like it. It is not a issue for me because I don't use the news groups very much. But if your a newsgroup dweller than you better check into it.

Hmm, i lived in s. cali, and my speed withy covad /earthlink is 1500/300 .. and i pay 49.99 for it, woudl i want to pay less for less upload speed ? No way.. but how close is pac bell's station to me? just about 500 feet away =]]

great deal...just got it for my sister. ordered thurs, earthlink came out on friday. up and running in 20-30 mins. she was getting great speeds (~2mb down). this was in houston, btw.

Earthlink is the best. I have reffered 3 people already and they all thank for me for it. One of them already on Roadrunner and he said that CS was so good - that alone made it worth the change. On top of everything in most areas with earthlink you get AN UNLIMITED DIAL UP BACK UP ACCOUNT - I believe verizon makes u pay for the dial up - so If you have a laptop and you travel you use one of the numbers (Nationwide - they have lots of numbers)

And the service is fast, I have had such fast speed in downloads in incredible..

I recommend them highly
spam control and pop blocker are free
and for those who care, they can even help you configer your Linux Box (I just checked) but If you are into Linux already - most likely you can figure out how to do it.

if you get earthlink dsl, make sure your in a huge backbone, AKA SOCAL NYC etc, otherwise... check with them before you order to see what your routing will be... i signed up and my routing was totally crap, I could not get under 100ms ping seeing how my Gateway was 3 states away... but, there download/upload rates and pings and overall connection is VERY stable.

I am currently on Earthlink DSL ( Covad) and my download/upload speed is 1500kbps/128kbps respectively. Beat the crap out my Cable Modem speed. Oh yeah, I am paying $29.99 for the 1st 6 months. And don't forget they'll charge you $19.99 (I think) for shipping the modem. Note: unless you have a USB Router I strongly suggest you to ask them for the ethernet modem if you don't specify they'll send you a USB Modem. Or just just tell them you are running NT4.0.

I didn't read the whole thread, but I just signed up for Earthlink Cable, 6 months for 30 bucks each through Dell with the $80 rebate. It said that DSL there's a 1 year contract. <shrug>

i have earthlink cable in quees NY , their speed is 2m down ALL the time, nothing more nothing less, no outage for 5 month since i have it, newsgroup is very slow through.
