What about canceling and resigning up?

Only DSL in Wilmington NC(Where Jordan will play Oct 9th) only has Bellsouth and I can't even get that

From what I head about earthlink (it's crap), you have to sign up for at least a year contract. You can cancel, but with a penalty fee. The only way to cancel & get away with it, is to complain saying that you didn't agree to pay for horrible access that wasn't in your contract. raise hell with their tech support, and finally the president. That's how I got out of a horrible dsl service.

i don't know about the dsl, but if it's as bad as their dial up, i'd stay away. anyhow, i hear cable is faster and more reliable than dsl, for now anyways.

my dial-up access used to rock before Earthlink swallowed up my provider of choice, Mindspring - then it sucked bigtime

since then I've been using eartlink dsl and aside from the long wait for the self-install package, my dsl speed and uptime has been damn good. Speed 1054(down)/78(up) kbps. BTW- I live 20 miles west of Boston, MA.

I only had to sign up for 6 months minimum - BTW earthlink runs on verizon lines out here not covad, if it was covad I would have had more options

check out www.dslreports.com to find out about coverage in your area, available providers as well as side-by-side comparison of dsl packages and pricing

just my 2 cents

earthlink is just a front end for Covad in the LA area (probably the same across the nation). There are only a few companies that actually do the DSL service: SBC, Covad, Northpoint i think. Covad was a helluva lot better better SBC/Pac Bell, but is currently in bankruptcy. whatever, it works and has been up continuously for a couple of weeks. if you live in the sticks (e.g. the fly-over states), you might get hiccups in service, but the most major metro areas are well established with DSL and should have no problems.

I used Earthlink DSL (Mindspring) before. When I cancelled it, they switched me to dial-up account and didn't tell me. I got billed a month later (I knew it only from the email invoice when I tried to receive email from my mindspring.com to see if it's really closed) and wasted me 2 hours to cancel the account again (several calls, bounced between different department, on hold for more than 1 hour) and get my credit back (yet to check)

My Earthlink DSL rocks.
And I got free equipment, free activation, and self install kit/free installation. Consistently get 1.3 down and 138 up. Not bad if you ask me. Of course I was stuck with 28,800 for the last 4 years.... so anything was better.

I am using Earthlink (mindspring) dsl at home for over a year already. very happy with the service. downtime is less than 1%. started with 6 months contact, free modem (effiecent 5260) and free installation for $50 a month. getting 1500/256. better than most dsl/cable for this price.

EARTHLINK SUCKS.

My DSL has not been working for these past 2 months.

I've been on hold EVERY NIGHT for 2 weeks at least an hour and a half.

They don't help me fix the problem.

And now they say that the line that THEY installed is faulty. They won't come out to check it out unless I pay $100.00.

I HATE EARTHLINK.

my experience with these places in general is that they all suck.

I had verizon DSL before, and the tech support was full of idiots. I had no DSL for all of the month of august last year due to a mistake on their side that I had pinned down since day one...

Now I have moved and I have adelphia cable, and they can't keep their up for more than 10 minutes. It seems its a lose lose situation where there is too much of a monopoly for users to win. They just don't care about the average person. And they make it a bigger win for them with the waiting. Not only do you wait at least 30 minutes to talk to someone, but you have to wait 1 month to get setup, so people are reluctant to switch, cause they want access, albeit bad.

Just my $.02

I haven't had any problems at all with Earthlink until the wtc incident. I get 1.5Mbps down and 384K up on a 6 month contract. I even got a $200 rebate from covad. Now, i'm just waiting for the damaged lines to get fixed.

The quality of your Earthlink service is primarily dependent on who's actually providing you the service. Once they submit the DSL order to the actual provider, it's up to the actual provider to get the equipment to you and get your DSL line up.

I have VerizonDSL thru Earthlink. (LA area has Verizon, PacBell, and Covad for DSL, depending on where you're located). Self-install kit came in a few days after I placed the order, plugged the DSL modem in, and I was up and running. I haven't experienced a single downtime yet in over a year. Then again, I don't stay connected all day and night, so I could've just missed it.

So I can't complain about Earthlink service.
They're fine if you don't have any service problems and can get a better deal by going to Earthlink instead of direct to your DSL provider.
But if you have a problem, good luck trying to work things out through a middleman (earthlink).

Ok people, here's my rant on earthlink dsl, their CS, and their sh*tty service.

I should by saying I was on mindspring dsl (1500/384) before they got bought out by earthlink. The speed was GREAT and the ping was EXCELLENT. I was getting 30-40 pings to major internet sites. My connection never got dropped - it was ROCK solid and would be up for days. Never had any problems. DSL was going through Covad.

->>>>Now move forward in time when Earthlink acquired Mindspring.

At first, I thought okay, mindspring got bought out, but my dsl service quality would still be the same (1500/384). WRONG! Everything started going downhill from there - my dsl connection gets DROPPED SEVERAL TIMES DAILY, ESPECIALLY AT 5:00-5:30. My ping skyrockets randomly, my downloads are randomly SLOW, and THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NONEXISTANT.

Customer service from Earthlink? Their CS employees must be getting paid minimum wage since it doesn't require too much brain matter to follow a troubleshooting flow chart! Hit a dead end in the flow chart? They'll just transfer you to another CS personnel and you get stuck in a loop wasting hours on the phone.

I once called and complained about why my DSL connection keeps getting dropped everyday around 5:30 and the guy asked "Are there any CB radios around your area, are there any fans around the dsl modem/line, etc etc" and I replied, "nothing's changed for the last 6 months." I asked him to do a line test for me and he very quickly said he'll transfer me to tier 2....That was as far as I as I hung up the phone after waiting for god knows how long.

Excuse me if I should post in a different forum, but this thread has finally started my process toward a faster connection. I was waiting for cable, but it still is not available in my neighborhood in Dallas.

I have been checking all the local providers pricing, and they are all very similar, but did not know if I needed to request service that provides a static IP address, if I plan to use my SMC router?

I would also be interested in any additional commnets on the service providers. My choices are SBC, Earthlink. Verizon is here, but they can not do my house, which seems strange since it would be the same line? Sprint states DSL is not available, but offer Sprint ION, whatever the heck that is.

AT&T had previously sent literature about another type of hig speed access including local service, not cable, not DSL using a dish. It was available when I checked availability back then, but not when I checked last night was not available.

Thanks

John

ppl in bay area (CA) with old homes stay away from earthlink.
i tried to get setup for dsl with them. after all the delays
that people before have mentioned i finally hooked it all up.
no go... hours of time wasted on phone and getting shuttled
from person to person over the course of two *weeks*. finally
got a CS with a little brain... it seems the lines are old and
they can see me trying to log in to server but server disconnects.
he says there is slim to no chance that they can put in a ticket
with covad who then has to forward it to pacbell (since they own
the lines) to come take a look. his advice was to just cancel it
and go with pacbell dsl. i cant believe they actually their
customers to go to a competitor !
and then earthlink has a gall to charge my credit card
for a month or so time that i spent debugging their problem
and for equipment !! just asked credit card company to hold
payment after being on hold for hours trying to get the charges
cancelled.

whoosh... never going to recommend earthlink to anybody.

Earthlink DSL is awesome here in Richmond, VA... it took a while to get it installed (3 months, but they gave me 3 months of free dial-up while I waited). That and Covad had a $200 rebate, so the first 5 months were essentially free, not to mention the modem. The price went up from $40 to $50/month, but who cares, love it

about static vs dynamic IP addresses:
i know a friend of mine who has dynamic ip addresses and was
able to get dsl on all his computers using a router (uses PPPoE).
if you need to get into a company firewall (for eg using vpn)
then you need a static ip address. at least that's how it is
in our company. it *could* be company dependant.

Anyone have any experience using Earthlink cable modem access?

I have Roadrunner thru Time Warner now, and Earthlink is going to be offered over the same lines for 42 instead of TWC's 45. I can't figure out if I still have to have cable to get Earthlink's rate. Currently, I have to have the $39 a month cable service to get the $45 rate. Otherwise, I pay $65.

I'm hoping I can switch to Earthlink w/o the cable requirement, so I can get one of the directtv tivo systems. I called Earthlink's support desk and the girl claims the rate is $42 no matter what, but she had no idea what I was talking about, so I'm dubious.
