earthlink/windows live compat. mail client?

Windows live compatable e-mail client???

I'm trying to transfer 3+ years of old e-mails from 'Earthlink Total Access' [utter
shit] to a newer desktop for my parents.

Earthlink's export tool has created a compressed folder with attachments designed
to import into windows Live mail, and doesn't work with Thunderbird or similar
email clients I'm familiar with.

Can anyone recommend a client which can use this, or how to export from windows
live into a useful format?

There are several thousand messages and the old desktop is slow and mostly broken,

so moving 10-15 at a time as .eml attachments isn't really feasible.

I don't have anything for you, but that's exactly why I insist on using free software for my email client. Earthlink held my mail hostage, and I couldn't easily get it transfered over.

I suggest using Thunderbird, and dealing with it. The time to fix future is now. Relying on proprietary software has the very real possibility of burning you again.

Possibly more helpful... Could you maybe forward them all to a Gmail account, and then download them into a free client?

thunderbird will import windows live mail, so you may need to install it just to import the old email and then from thunderbird import the windows live mail.
