Well...This deal is not ONLY offered in San Fran...or even on the west coast, for that matter. I had just ordered Earthlink DSL yesterday and am getting everything that comes with the $49.95/month plan for only $39.95/month. Free installation, free modem, 1.5Mbps down/384kbps up, etc., etc., etc...and I live in NYC.

oh cool, i was only saying tha cuz that is what the sales rep told me. i think it's a good deal i was gonna go with pacific bell but after reading all their bad reviews i deceideed that this was worth a shot. oh and not to mention their 6month contract only requires you to pay 49.99 if you break it unlike pacific bell which has a 12 month contract and no free modem, they expect you to pay 200$ for early cancelation. i'm really glad i did not get stuck with pac bell i was really close to getting dsl from them but just canceled my order.

Let's just hope the installation gets completed sometime in the near future, and with the least amount of hassle necessary...

Here are some reviews for their service if you wanna know what people think of earthlink, i think it's pretty well rated for their price. DSL Reports they say average wait to get the service working is 37 days, not too bad since they do provide you with the unlimited dialup during that period.

*edit: whoa look at that i'm a senior memeber now!*

Can someone clarrify the sharring abilities of this service? I already have mindspring dsl, and Ive been told they allow 3 simultaneous dynamic connections. So can I just stick a switch on the uplink, and the computers to the downlink?

Thanks,

Steve

warning: I ordered my DSL 8/15 and they said it "got stuck in the database". They now gave me a 10/18 install date. Stay on top of them, though with the 30+ minute wait times, it can be difficult.

I want to stay with them as they are my isp and they offer about the fastest connection for the money, so I will grin and bear it, though I may ask for free dialup since they are offering it to others and get my fees back due to their problem.

i ordered it through them on 09/11 and i live in san jose too. The guy who took my address down made a mistake and put down my state as AL. California doesnt even rhyme with AL so how the hell did he get that one wrong. Anyway you guys oughta know that they will contact you on your installation ONLY on your earthlink or mindspring email that they assign you when you call. At least thats what they told me.

AL is usually the first state in an address pull-down menu, so he probably didnt change it from AL to CA

Earthlink DSL was up and running for me within 10 days of order date. The waiting time was just for GTE to send me my modem kit.

EPcrew, regarding being in NYC, did Covad provision your line since you get 1.5Mbps?

I live in san jose btw and still waitin for the peebell dummies to show up to service the line. They delayed me long enough.

ss284 and others asking questions. I've done a lot of research on this and will give you guys the low down.

If you get your connection through Mindspring/Covad (proffesional install) you get the following:

1.5 mbps down
384 kbps up
3 dynamic ip's using pppoe
5 email addresses
10 megs of web space

To set up a network with this simply plug your free EXTERNAL modem(speedstream 5260 i believe) into the uplink port on your hub/switch using the crossover cable that came with your modem. Then plug in the computer's on your network as usual and install the pppoe software on them. Then your all set, no setting up sharing no port conflicts, no peer to peer software conflicts, nothin, just a good ol' connection.

If you go through Earthlink/ILEC (also known as the self install) you get the following:

768 kbps down 128 kbps up (this can vary depending what region your in)
1-3 dynamic ip's using pppoe (for the most part they have begun restricting usage to 1 ip)
1 email address with 5 extra costing $2 per month (family plan)
10 megs of web space

So not only is the self install slower but there also begining to take away the extra ip's. Also for some crazy reason Earthlink is still transitioning to giving 5 email's after the merger. The only advantage I see with the self install is a faster up time and 1 less appointment, go with the pro Covad install if it's available.

monolith, there is no way to get a static ip, they claim it's for security purposes.

Most of this info was gathered from the awesome site dslreports since Earthlinks site for the most part has very little info.

thats excellent! I just ordered a linksys switch, so everything should be great!

thanks,

Steve

PS I have heard that a new technology has emerged that will actually improve ping speeds, you just have to call your ISP and ask them to switch it. could someone please give some more info on this?

Thanks,

Steve

Sure can Steve. It's actually not a new technology, it's just something Covad uses to "increase the reliability of it's network" simply call up EL/MS or 1888 GO COVAD and tell them to turn INTERLEAVING OFF also known as turning fast packet switching ON. Either way they might not know what your talking about so be persistent. Apparently they have to reprovision your line with interleaving off but it only takes a few minutes. Afterwards you will enjoy approximately 50ms decrease in pings times and lag in games and when checking email/browsing should be MUCH better.

Enjoy
