Earthquake in San Jose

I was on the golf course and one of my partners said there was an earthquake, he felt stuff, said the trees were creaking. This was Tilden Park in the Berkeley Hills.

But there was a quake about 34 minutes ago that was very sharp here in Berkeley. Stuff fell off my walls and tore a piece of molding off at the ceiling/wall joint. Had me worried for a second that the Big One had come. USGS site says the epicenter was in Berkeley, 4.2.

How long did the second one last for you? I was in Lafayette today and it was a sudden jolt then minor shacking for a second; this last one I am in Martinez (farther away) and it was steady shaking for maybe 6-10 seconds.

I guess my sense of time is off, as the 2nd one felt like no more than 5 seconds? maybe it was longer, I don't know. I'm somewhat freaked out by these things, lol.

I'm in Albany, which is just north of Berkeley.

The first one, I was at work on campus, in "the very large building that most people will recognize," where I have been and not felt quakes before. Today, however, it was a good 3-4 seconds and a bit of swaying, shaking, loud noise.

It's been so long ago, I don't remember what the earthquake activity was in the days before the Loma Prieta quake.
It's normal for the Bay area to have dozens (or more) small "micro-quakes" every day. It's only when they get to the mid-3 range that people even seem to notice. "Huh? What was that?" And when they get to 4 or above..."EARTHQUAKE! Oh...that wasn't bad. Go back to sleep."

That's a pretty high concentration. I'd expect the big one though to just come out of the blue. None of these quakes are even worth mentioning really. When we start getting lots of 5's and 6's then it's interesting.

Another one last night in Berkeley around 3:30am. 3.6. This one was about 1 block from the stadium, lol.

I woke up about 10 seconds before it occurred. Same for everyone I know here.

There was one up near Truckee last night just after 11:30. Originally a 5.2, downgraded to a 4.7. According to the folks at KCRA, it shook parts of Sacramento pretty good...
