Ha ha...haven't we been through enough earthquake preparedness drills to know you're not supposed to do that?

sorry guys, no need to panic. The shaking came from me, but i didn't think you could feel that all the way across the country. Damn school food really tears me up sometimes

b0mbrman: Actually, the last time I can remember doing earthquake drills was in elementary school. I'm sure it wasn't the smartest thing for me to run around the house to find my roomies to ask if they felt it.

I visited Taiwan earlier this year and they're >hardcore< about earthquake preparedness. In all the buildings over a story or so, they'd have these hooks near the windows. There was also this wound-up rope thing (grapple?) next to them. It took me a couple days to figure out that in the event of an earthquake, I'm supposed to rapple down the side of the building... cool, huh?

isn't concrete bad? well unless reinforced by steel inside... or are you kidding. wood flexible = good!

and rapeling down? good lord. rope ladders would be a better idea me thinks

heh damnit no wonder no one was posting in my thread, this guy posted the same minute i did! #^@

Jenova314: Yah, the freakiest thing was when we visited this 6 or 7-story structure in a park in the south part of the island. I looked down, saw the hooks and said there's no way I'm rappling down the side of that.

I was too busy downloading from kazaa and managing files even to get up from my chair and get under a doorway. Shook gentle for a minute then got harder.

Nefrodite: I dunno... with the severity and frequency of earthquakes over there, I dunno if wood could hold up. Plus, is it possible to have all-wood structures over 4-5 stories?

My wife and I felt it while I was playing Wolfenstein multiplayer and she was surfing the web. I thought it was my dog rubbing against my chair wanting me to pet him, but my wife said "hey I think that was an earthquake" and I said she was probably right. Well, she was right!

Would somebody please set this woman up with a date?

I was at UC Davis when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit, and it felt stronger up there back then than this one did here tonight. This one was, however, strong enough to confuse my dog (who's never been through one).

oh, for tall buildings you use steel and all sorts of fun suspension systems and stuff.

woods fine for 2 stories and stuff, normal housing.

I didn't feel it because I'm in UC Davis now. But the loma prieta quake hit me big time. Do you guys remember the fire and the collapsed buildings in the Marina district? That was accross the street from my house.
