My right ear has lot of ear wax in it and it's too far to get with a Q-tip, in fact this morning I woke up to a completely blocked ear. I ended up tilting my head so that ear is down and using the butt end of my electric razor near the ear to vibrate it out, it worked to unblock it, but the chunk is still in there. I don't feel it now but if I put my finger I can feel it blocking my ear again. It's been like that for a while.

I found this online:

http://www.getridofthings.com/hygiene/get-rid-of-ear-wax.htm

But is it really safe to be putting liquids directly in my ear like that? Seems unsafe and it could come in contact with the ear drum, no?

Is there other methods? I could try the razor thing for an extended period of time I guess but it would not really budge further down when I tried it.

LOL, you just stuck "the butt end of my electric razor" in your ear and you're worried about liquids? You do know people are waterproof, right?

errr I stuck it near the ear, to cause vibration, not inside, it would not fit even if I was stupid enough to stick foreign objects into it.

I'm more worried about liquid coming in contact with the actual ear drum, isin't that bad? I don't want to stick anything directly in the canal unless it really is safe.

What do think happens in a pool/lake/ocean? Warm water is the safest thing you can use.

The OP must only take baths because he's worried about the shower filling up all the holes in his head.

So it's safe then? I'll give it a try. I figured that when you go under water it never gets to the ear drum, same effect as sticking a cup upside down in the water, water wont go inside.

So, you never turn your head under water?
I'm just playing with you. People didn't used to be waterproof til Monsanto added the gene to our food supply. True story.

Um, no. You realize there are tubes leading into your throat from your ears right? Your ear canal has the ability to drain fluid and equalize pressure that way.

Just get one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/SYRINGE-EAR-4O...dp/B000FVXMCW/

My ear was completely blocked after using a Q-tip. I tried one of those ear wax removal kits with the chemicals and it didn't work. Went to the doctor and they just used the ear syringe with water. The chunk of ear wax that came out was HUGE. And I had superhuman hearing afterwards (seriously, I could hear the friction between my legs and my basketball shorts when I was walking).

There's one risk with getting water in there: The nice and handy ball (that will eventually dry out and break down) may turn into a creamy sludge, that will not come out. Had this two years ago, and believe me, getting it sucked out of the ear with a suction apparatus is one of the least pleasant memories of my life....

If it's blocking the ear, just go to a doctor, they'll pull that ah heck out of there with a pincer. Without much risk to your eardrums, as they actually see/know what they're doing. Plus they may give you additional tips on how to prevent build-up.

i had this issue on both sides. here's the history:

1. partial blockage - doc prescribes lukewarm h20 + hydrogen peroxide OR debrox
2. blockage is too severe and eventually becomes complete blockage
3. doc schedules appointment to flush ear canals with warm water (make sure it's not too warm)
4. after several flush attempts on both sides the blockage is eventually flushed out and my hearing becomes superhuman as another poster reported.
5. water was too warm and i got really dizzy.
6. profit.
7. he recommends monthly debrox treatments to prevent future blockage but i'm too lazy and his nurse is cute.

Yeah, I had my doc shoot a water pik into my ear once and it was so ridiculous. My hearing was amazing afterwards. I should buy one for home. The one they used was really messy, and sprayed water everywhere. Like another poster, huge ball of earwax.

Use a few drops of rubbing alcohol and drip them into the affected ear and keep your head turned for about two minutes. Then tilt your head and let it all drain out. The wax should come out with it...this also works for water stuck in your ear btw

I used ear candles and it worked wonders. They are not typically 'recommended' by the medical community though. Easy to find at your local cosmetology shop.

I've had this happen multiple times from wearing headphones too much. I used Debrox which can be picked up at any CVS or Walgreens and comes with ear drops to aid in the loosening of the wax and a rubber syringe to help spray warm water in your ear.

As others have said, your hearing will be amazing after you do this and you'll be shocked from all the stuff you've been missing.

One more thing is that Q-tips should be avoided because all they do is jam the wax in further if you have a lot of buildup.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I'll go to the pharmacy next time I get around to it and see what kind of kits they have. I figure if it's a kit made for that at least I know it's safer than putting random stuff in there. Will be interesting to see (or more like hear) the increase in hearing.

I've done this but with hydrogen peroxide quite few times. Bubbles tingle a bit but works quite well.

Once, I went to sea and swam for 2 hours.. the salty water entered my ears, it was hurting, so I went to a doctor who wash my ears using water..
So I believe it is normal...

I've used the pencap of a Bic or Papermate pen for years to pick my ears. Yea, that sounds gross or at risk of stabbing my ear drums out, but it's kept them squeaky clean. The doc even asks me how I keep it so clean and what drugs I use to clean them out. She was surprised and amused I used a pen-cap...just said to be careful

i'm annoyed cuz i went to an ENT once to get my hearing tested...and i feel like i asked this guy how often to clean my ears and the best way to and he didn't really answer my question, so now i have to go back and waste that copay fee.

i usually just scrape it out with my fingers - i feel like listening to my iPhone 5 so much creates more earwax.
