Easiest router with DSL?

A friend is newly to DSL, for some reasons he had to have Linksys. After every model of Linksys router, none of them work - he even managed to get both DSL provider and Linksys tech support on conference meeting.
I don't know much about G router (I currently use Netgear b router, plug it in, can't be easier than that. ) Which today's modem is easiest one? Of course, less drop is better. By the way, nearest neighbor is 500 feet away, secure or not, not a big concern.

Buffalo routers are straight and to the point, easy to set up, work flawlessly from all the encounters I've had. Also, they are resonably priced. Best Buy carries them if you want to check them out in a B&M store. If you don't need higher speed, they have a wireless G for 60 bucks that is pretty sweet

1. Does the DSL work without the router? If it does maybe this thread will help. http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=36&threadid=1934875&enterthread=y This method took me 10 minutes to install and test with a linksys wrt54G v6. It works great throughout the small house and on the back deck. It is my understanding that the "cd" linksys install is harder to implement, likely to corrupt the linksys configuration screen, and leaves a network (when it works) that will require rebuilding the DSL modem sign-on for future troubleshooting.

That said, yesterday I ordered the $40 Buffalo whr-g54s from Newegg for myself because it's $10 cheaper and can be used wirelessly with another whr-g54s as an adapter/access point in the future without adding firmware. Buffalo has a model for $10 or $15 more with a xmit amplifier for more range if that's of interest to your friend.
