works great man
now my duron 800@1000 (1.8 reported as 1.85) is even cooler (and quiet as hell) with a 80mm panaflo H1A
30C case temp
33-35C Idle CPU temp
38-40C Full use temp

How hot was it before the 80mm fan?
And would the center of the cpu get enough air?

Im seriously going to try this mod.

with the YS tech fan it was:
30C Case temp
35-37C Idle CPU temp
42-44C Full use temp

Case temp 22

PAL6035 with sanyo denki=35
PAL6035 with delta cpu=31
FOP38 with Antec 80mm fan=34
FOP38 with delta+29

All on my MSI. I would guess as mikewarrior has pointed out that the 1 - 2 degree difference is more in actual cpu temps. So for now Im back with the noise.

The 80mm fan will overflow over the HS and blow air under the socket, and make your temps even more drastic of a change on AMD boards due that temp probe is under the socket. Now with the cool air flowin under there cause of the oversized fan is just gonna throw off your temps and really not fair to compare between your previous 60mm setup. But its also nice blowin that stagnet hot air under the socket, reducing temps even more.
But in all this is a great mod, in all my comps i've been running PCP&C 80 Silencers fans ontop of my HeatSinks, GW FDP32, GW FKP, Alpha PEP66, Hedgehog. Its impossible getting a fair amount of air and quietness with a 60mm fan.

how is the air going to get to the probe? that makes 0 sense to me.
The CPU is making a (damn near) airtight seal with the socket, and to get to the back the 4 little holes are the only way, and not much are would go through them..

On my socket top and bottom opposite ends of the heatsink mounting tabs, theres like a tunnel that leads right to the center. You can look through it if there no CPU installed

i did this but should i have the fan blowing on the heatsink or sucking air off of it?

I wonder if mikewarrior2 has any comments on this.

A thought I would have is that sucking air would be better than blowing air because to suck it is really venting it out thru the air being exhausted out the case rather than blowing the hot air into a turbulence as it hits themotherboard generally increasing the case temps. Or is my logic flawed?

supposed to blow on the FOPs...on the Alphas the fan is supposed to suck, that's why the Alphas have that piece below the fan...so the air comes in at the bottom of the heatsink and goes out the top

An example would be here how 2cooltek explains how the thermoengine..cause of its heatsink design blows air all over the socket, unlike normal heatsink that has a full base. He explains briefly how the thermoengine gives you false reading cause of this.

Heatsink test..scroll down to the thermoengine

One word of caution. Bigger fans have bigger motors, therefore the diameter of the center is bigger. Air under that motor is not moving. That is also the place where the actual CPU die touches the heatsink, and it is the warmest. I think an asymetric mounting of an 80mm fan should be more advantageous. But you need special clips. Anyone up for this challage? Please post temp readings b4 and after.
