I got those info from bankrate, did anyone deal with those banks before, they have 3% interest checking account. anyone?

3% ?! I can't even get that much from a Money Market Plus account at E*trade. Anyone know anything about those institutions? They probably "readjust" their interest rates soon after you open an account.

Readjusting their rates wouldn't make much sense since it would effect everyone. There not just waiting for you to open an account and then, wham, lower the rate on everyone's account.

I opened my ING Direct account for almost a year. Loving it. FDIC insured and earns higher than my GE Interest Plus. I'm a BoA customer for years even before my local bank been acquired by BoA. I keep my BoA accounts but use ING Direct for better rate. Transferring is easy. I only don't like the delay sometime.

If you like to try ING Direct you can PM me for referral. Is it okay to use PM or I have to provide my e-mail address here?

It's not necessarily an across-the-board cut but, possibly, just an "introductory rate" that ends after, say, 30 days...then you might end up getting a low interest rate like every other place is offering-----see tommigsr message a few posts up........

I'd crap my drawers if I could get over 3% for a relatively liquid interest bearing account.

ING is great. I have been with ING over a year now. Because you can only transfer $$$ in and out from your checking accounts to ING saving account, I think it is extremely safe. Highly recommended.

If you got someone to refer you, you can also get $25 bonus while they can also earn $10. PM me if you need a reference.

I'd recommend you contact your nearest investment expert to get into a short term fund, if interest is what you're after. I currently invest $500 a month in the SENTINEL SHORT MATURITY fund with an interest rate solidly at 4.8%. Great stuff! Plus it acts just like a savings account, in which you can remove your money at any time without fees.

Another happy ING Direct user here. Very good interest rate and very easy to move money into and out of the account.

If you sign up through existing account holders, you can get $25 with your opening deposit...your referrer gets $10. Once your account becomes active you can refer others as well.

Everbank's rate is only for the first three months, but I've been getting 2.96% on my checking account through Presidental Bank for the last year. They require an inital deposit of $2500, but you must maintain only $1000 thereafter. They also require at least 2 direct deposits per month.

Only hitch is that you can't use it as a pool for your Paypal account(s) as you can't transfer funds into/out of it aside from to your bank account, but a good deal otherwise.

Shameless plug: I can offer references as well if anyone wants to make the $25...send me a PM.

Sounds okay, but the site won't load for me. You are probably going to be getting some posts wondering if you work for that site though... this being your first post makes it a little suspect.

I doubt it. ING is a big company, most people on here have had accounts with them. They use to give 50 bucks for opening an account.

you need to check that again. ING is one of the largest financial institutions in the world.

are you sure those are current rates?

None of the institutions in my area offer over 2.5%

What credit union are you talking about...do they require certain membership criteria?

thanks.

The SENTINEL SHORT MATURITY fund does not pay "interest"... if you are making money it is because the fund is earning a positive return on its investments. I am sure you are not guaranteed a 4.8% interest rate.

I opened my ING Direct account last summer, and I really love it. Have had no problems with it, and it's nice having the money accessible to me in just a few days (like 3 or 4 days) without penalty. I have it linked to my checking account at my local bank, and I use it as my savings account.

I opened the account at ING with $1 and earned $50 thru the Quicken offer (I don't think they're doing that one
anymore, but you can still open with $1). I thought I'd close the account later on, because I didn't think I'd feel comfortable with my money in an online account. Eventually, I started using it to put aside some cash for savings, and I watched the interest accumulate. Customer service has been great, too... I forgot my user ID several times, and the customer service reps have been very helpful and polite. It's really been a pleasure having this account, esp. because there are no fees and there's a great interest rate.

I opened accounts with Netbank and Principal bank for their account-opening bonuses. I never log into these accounts and they end up locking me out of my account because I don't log in often enough (or because I use the "Back" button, as in Principal's case). Then, it's been such a hassle to get a new password. Netbank even charged me a fee becuase they sent me a paper statement when I told them I didn't *WANT* paper statements ($5 fee). I called, and it took a long time to straighten out. No major complaints with Principal bank (except that you can't use the "BACK" button or you'll get locked out of the account). I earned $50 for opening the account with them, $25 amazon gift certificate for setting up billpay (but never actually using it), and they recently sent me a customer satisfaction survey for another ($10?) Amazon gift certificate. Anyhow, in the long run, I'm going to be staying with ING Direct...

If anyone wants the referral signup (I get $10, you get $25), email me: greybeh@mac.com.

re: Presidential Savings F.S.B.

I've had an account there since 1995, and the Internet Checking since it first came out. The 3% checking is awesome, but it's only on your first 25,000 so if you've got more than you'll want to spread it around to other banks. The only downside I've found w/ Presidential is that their online banking interface is rather cheesy.

Within the past year or so, American Express had a great "high-yield" savings account that was even better at 3.25%, but nowadays it's down dramatically to 1.29%. Time to shut that one down and move to ING!

edit: FYI, for those of you who purchased TurboTax this year, forget about the referral bonuses and instead use this link for a $50 new account bonus. You will need your TT product key.

Yes, current rates. www.boptifcu.com Don't know about current membership requirements.

it appears that any of the good interest rates (3%+) are just short-term/introductory rates.

Anyone know of any deals out there?

The advantages INGDirect's Orange Savings account has are the lack of any monthly fee, no minimum balance requirements, and no minimum activity requirements. So for students who usually don't have $1,500 to leave in a bank; this is a great way to save money.
When transferring money from your Orange account to your Checking account you need to allow two business days for the funds to clear. When transferring money from your Checking account to your Orange account you need to allow five business days for the funds to clear.

I have been using Internet-only savings accounts for five years, and I have never had a single problem.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I have already referred everyone I know to this account because I think it is great. Unfortunately I did it before they were offering the $25/$10 bonus. So if you want a $25 referral PM me.

ING seems to be quite an attractive option. I had opened my account with Charter One some time back at 3% interest. Was great till last month when my interest was dropped to 1.5%.

Anyway, it's a checking account (energised checking) and still gives the highes ratet on any checking account. Also, you can use their well established 'physical' banks.
