All you have to do is send out a business related email - something maybe HR related, or something for a random department with no real vital information. Could be a simple IT Request. Make sure to include on it a large mass email group.

Then when the reply alls start coming in over the next 48 hours of people replying "I'm not sure what this is" and "please take me off this email chain" - that's all you need to justify firing them

Jesus fuck people are incompetent moronic fools.

I got in trouble for suggesting this years ago. Our group was running out of work and layoffs were very common. Hundreds of people from another group not in danger of layoffs kept replying to all. I suggested they lay them off and keep us around. It did not go over well.

LOL. Yeah, that's happened a few times at my company, it's hilarious. One time it was somebody asking their boss to get a day off, but for some reason it was sent to all employees. One other time there was also these mass emails going around about some kind of contest and every time one of them went out there was a guy who kept doing reply all with "Winner winner chicken dinner". Nobody knows who this guy is. I come in one day and there's like 20 emails in my inbox that just say that lol.

That's the first thing I thought of when I read your title. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.

First to go is whoever in IT not knowing how to properly setup distribution groups. Any large email groups are automatically restricted for authorized personnel only. Everybody knows this.

You sound like a manager trying to pass off blame to IT. The IT staff probably tried to train the authorized personnel (whose scope was too big but IT was overruled because Linda might just have to send out a single mass email sometime in the next 5 years) on proper use of the distribution groups but was told "I don't have time" or was trained and then the users promptly forgot their training when they saw a cat video on Youtube.

I could create a company-wide email and put Spam & Virus Inside. Please Open Immediately and I bet 50% of the 250,000 people in my company would open that email. What they should be presented with is a pink slip instead saying, You Got Fired!

When we release a new version of a product (every month or so there's something) the VP and director-types always spend a couple days CC/reply-all ing everybody with "good job team" emails. Most of them are people I've never heard of. Sometimes they're not even in our division.

I'm always tempted to reply all to one of them and add my own to the conversation. Nothing disrespectful or insincere, honestly. But coming from some IT schmuck, instead of some yutz in management who has carte blanche with other peoples' time.

Linda is also on the list to go. Next!

I feel your pain...I teach all the managers about bcc
I've only been working in IT for about 4 years now but my list of pet peeves could fill a book already.

We created a fake phishing mail and sent it to all our people as a test for a seminar we were going to conduct for our users on how to recognize phishing messages and one of my help desk guys who was not in the loop on the test recognized it immediately and sent a mass email to the entire organization instructing them to not open it and delete it immediately. Probably 20% of my users still opened it and went to the page asking them to log in after receiving the email telling them not to.

Hahaha reminds me of one time there was a huge winter storm and they actually decided to close the office. First time ever I see something like that happen here. Was actually a dumb move because all you're doing is making people drive through a storm instead of waiting till it's over, but I guess it's better to do it when it's still light out. So anyway I was on help desk back then, and we were considered "essential service" so we didn't get to go. I would figure that the CSRs would also be considered essential service, they're the ones who actually bring in money to the company.

The problem isn't identifying incompetent employees. You don't need to look at bad email manners to know who your fuck-ups are. The problem is that most companies manage to make peace with having incompetent employees and keep them on because that's cheaper and easier than hiring and training a new batch of incompetent employees.

"essential service" is simply code for "suckers".

No different than shitbags that told my mother-in-law to come in during the flooding at Walmart.

Eh, the problem is that based on their actions on things like this alone, I can guarantee they are performing at 20% the rate of a normal employee would. The sheer incompetence of seeing 80+ emails in your fucking inbox all with the same message/subject line - and somehow it crosses your mind that you should reply all saying "Same, remove me" is mind boggling. I just can't even....

I don't think it's a problem to can morons that are performing @ 20% - the kicker (and the key to making it valuable) is giving the people who perform at 100% enough compensation so they don't leave for the competitor. And thats where most shit companies fail is retaining the people that are talented.

The problem still boils down to people not having standards and not recognizing good employees, but there's no shortage of potential causes. When every other suit has a moron nephew or buddy that they refuse to fire, for example, it's an uphill fight. Aside from the obvious problem, it makes it harder to justify firing the unprotected morons, since if performance were the real criteria the buddies would be out too.
