easy way to tell if my usb ports are working?

i'm running xp pro. never used the usb ports before. i tried connecting my nikon 995 after installing the nikon view 6 software...but when i try and launch the nikon transfer i keep getting an error message telling me that there is no CF card in the camera or reader. this is not the case. also, when i used to turn on the camera while connected to the usb cable (on my other pc) the nikon view software would launch automatically...now nothing happens. i can't figure out what the problem is.

Try a USB mouse or keyboard.

i just plugged my usb microsoft intellimouse explorer in and nothing happened. i didn't install the mouse software...but i didn't get a pop up indicating that windows found new hardware. maybe my usb ports aren't configured properly?

USB ports integrated in your motherboard, pci card, front mounted...?? Check connectivity and pinouts.

i have a new dell 4550. device manager lists the usb drivers as working properly.

Have you tried a USB mouse in all 4 usb ports in the back and 2 in the front?

no, i only tried it in one port. good call...i'll plug it in all of them. if the port is functioning properly windows should recognize it immediately, right?

yes, no software needed for the mouse either.

tried the usb mouse in all 6 ports and none of them worked. maybe they aren't working properly after all.

Are You sure the mouse works?
