Why does everyone suggest using the BIOS to overclock instead of this, or why not a combination of both? I don't get it.

One thing I've noticed with EasyTune is it allows for smaller memory multipliers, meaning I don't have to overclock my memory as much. The BIOS only goes to 2.5, so my memory is at stock speed at only 2.88GHz with a 320MHz FSB from 2.4GHz (I have an E6600).

I would think that being able to keep the memory speed the same is advantageous, as I only purchased memory rated at 800MHz, and there is probably quite a bit of headroom left with the CPU, because voltage is still stock.

If someone could shed some light on the situation, then please lemme know.

I like to bios overclock 1) because I am sure that I am the only thing that can screw up the overclock while with a program sometimes they are not compatible completely with the motherboard(if using 3rd party software) and can cause lock ups and finding the right clockgen is a pain. Also they sometimes don't keep settings well or allow you to change more advanced settings like cpu multi, ram timings, and ram ratio. I use ntune on my 590 when Iam tweaking the fsb to get better performance or stability without going into the bios (I am lazy). I have used easytune 5 before on my athlon xp 1600+ which I used the auto clock to reach 1.6ghz. I haven't used it since so I cannot comment on how much you can do in it. If you can find a good manufacturer utility they will work the best with your motherboard but from what I hear some are better than others.

I have a Gigabyte P35-DS3R, so it came with EasyTune5. I'm quite sure it's compatible. Also, can't you play with the memory timings via the BIOS, but then adjust clockspeed/FSB/memory with EasyTune?

Hello Bovinicus,

i have the same motherboard and i have some good experiences with easytune for the cpu tuning and i'm in the same situation with the memory.

- increase the multiplier up so that the memory is at 800
- increase the ddr voltage with 0.1 v
- use easytune cia turbo

gave me very good results and stable with an e6320.

@bovinicus yeah If you like how easytune works (I know it comes with gigabyte mobos) then I would use it to do clockspeed/fsb/mem like you were saying because it does take a long time to go into the bios to change just the fsb.

The DS3 has always been a bit flaky in terms of booting with overclocks. I boot at 3.5ghz and then crank it up to 3.67 through easytune and it works fine

Good to get some varied feedback. It felt to me like that whole "Always overclock via the BIOS" thing was some kind of forum mantra which is based on old and/or lacking information.

Right now I'm sitting at 3GHz with stock memory speed and stock voltages all around. I may just stick with that for now since I'm not doing anything that really requires that much power anyway. I like using stock voltages too.

Thanks for all your feedback!
