Not that often. Sometimes I'm on a quick lunch break and I need to run back to study so I don't call friends up and I just walk to a restaurant, eat in 20 min and run off. But usually I have time to eat lunch with friends so I call them up.

Now that would be weird.

even if it were a hot woman who turns out to be a techie?

I do it often. I like to go for dinner by myself and do crosswords etc. It's nice to be waited on while you relax, and there's no mess to clean up afterwards.

I do it pretty often. Sometimes its nice to just relax and have a nice meal alone. If someone else thinks its weird, too bad for them.

I don't recall other customers asking to join me but I have had cute waitresses sit down with me.

I do it all the time. I have a schedule to keep (when working) and I don't want to deal with people that eat slow.

I don't understand the aversion...

If I want a great meal and I'm by myself or on vacation I'll hit it. I've eaten at Ruth's Criss by myself. I really don't care.

This thread should be "What is the most expensive meal you've eaten at a restaurant by yourself?"

Sushis bars are a good place to eat by yourself, although it's preferable to have many friends and a designated driver if you want to do Saki bombs.
You could also try Hooters, you'll have plenty of "friends" to stare at.

I feel a little bit uncomfortable sitting in a big, crowded restaurant all by myself.

most often than not (especially in restaurants around here where they know me) I can just get the guys to make something to-go for me that I can take back home or to my hotel room (if I'm out on business)

I don't eat out (besides fast food) or go to shows or movies alone, but I do watch movies alone in my house. I really enjoy watching good dramas, and can't concentrate on them as well if other people are around.

I generally don't go to any non-fast food restaurants when I'm by myself... but I occasionally do. The same when I'm traveling, be it for business or pleasure. I do go to the movie theater by my self occasionally.

While I do eat out and go to the movies by myself... I would *much* rather somebody go with me. I hate doing anything like that by myself. :-

I eat fast food alone quite often. When you are hungry, you are hungry. People will just assume I'm grabbing a bite on my way to work or some other important place. Have never felt the urge to have a fancy dinner by myself. I only do those with the girlfriend and good friends.

Similarly, I watch a lot of movies alone. But that's because most of my trips to the multiplex are last-minute nick-of-time type affairs. I will be home at 10PM, feel like watching a movie that starts at 10:30 - which gives me 30 mins to get dressed, start my bike and race like a mad man. Most of my friends need at least an hour just to get dressed, shave and gel their hair.

I went to the expensive restaurant at Mesa Verde wearing dirty jeans, a cut-off t-shirt, and smelling bad. The waitresses were pretty damn nice to me and I had a good time overall...probably drank more than I would have otherwise.

How many here eat solo at restaurants? Do you have a restaurant 'caliber' at which you no longer feel comfortable eating alone?

I think the most played out thing ever is those metrosexual fruits who bring their Macbook to Starbucks or Panera and read "deep" books in an effort to impress people, hopefully women. They sit their with their thick black framed glasses and are just generally annoying.

They're the people who are politically minded and abhor stereotypes, yet they're a walking stereotype, comforming to the "T".

I should bring my refurbished Dell notebook purchased from Dell Outlet to annoy the MacBook users at Starbucks.
