eBay account and TigerDirect account hacked

Similar situation happened to me about 8 months ago.

My paypal account got hacked. I had the same password on my paypal account as I did my email.

They logged into my email, created a rule to forward any emails from tigerdirect to some external address.

They put a $400 charge through to Tiger Direct

Then they made 82 transactions for a dollar amount of $27.50 to "Maryland Bible Society"


I talked with my bank we closed the account, canceled my mastercard. Created a new account transfered the balance and I had to fill out some disclosure forms and the bank became the victim. Within 4 days I had all my money back.

Paypal took care of the $400
My bank took care of the $2255

Personally I would reformat, Identity theft is just to hard to fix. I would also take a hard look at the passwords used, make sure all passwords have 8-10 random characters no dictionary words and include some caps and numbers as well as symbols whenever possible. Is there any one else that may of had unattended access to his computer, service person, housekeeper, other family member, friend?

With something as critical as identity theft and financial fraud, it's always best to reformat to know for SURE. It's better than a "probably" by several fold. Did he use the same password for these sites? Perhaps he fell victim to one of the several million fraud emails which LOOK like Paypal, eBay, etc?
