I purchased a 9700 Pro for a Old 1.4 GHZ Athlon I had set back as I was planning on making it into a PVR.

Well I am about 100% sure I have a burnt 9700 Pro. So much for positive ratings

But I just want to make sure. 2d is perfect, no problems at all. I first noticed this problem after getting windows installed and setup, then I went away for a few mins and the pipes screensaver started. Wierd shimmering and the whole screen literally shimmers out of existance, as in the shimmering is not just back and fourth, its more like someone takes a rag and wipes it across the screen and leaves blurred out streaks of what was the 3d image. I can still barely make out what it is, but it gets worse the longer I leave it. This also totally degrades the 2d screen so my only option is to reboot.

I have tried Battlefiedl 1942, Jedi Knight: JA, and a few more and all of had the exact same problem. At first I thought it was drivers so I downloaded latest, no fix. I have DX9C installed. As far as drivers go I am using ATI Tray Tool instead of the Ati Panel as I dont like the extra overhead it adds.

Anyone got any idea if there is a fix for this problem? Trying to check all avenues as I really need this card and so far the individual has not jumped at my refund request. Asked me simple things, which I understand verifying but I would prefer a if this then this and if that fails refund

Molex connector is connected, card is properly seated, I have not removed heatsink or fan, this is a made by Ati, 9700 Pro.

Thanks up front, hopefully its not burnt, but I am pretty sure it is.

Well u could try underclocking, also whats the temps of the card,it will start producing artifacts if it gets too hot.
(funny my 6200 started slightly artifacting at 160C, hehe and its still alive)

Would love to find out. Problem is I only downloaded (On another comp) Ati Tray Tool and the Drivers Only so I dont have the Ati Control Panel to see temps. Now I did try to get them installed but for the life of me I cant get Dot Net to install without crashing, may need other windows updates but the pc is no where near being on my network and not very easy for me (Disabled) to move it back and fourth. Am hoping it just needs windows updates, but it bombs out about 80% everytime I try to install it. This would not be a problem but thanks to Ati I cant get the old control panel so there is no other way that I know of to check temp, Ati tray tool is showing temp grayed out with no numbers.

As far as underclocking it I am honestly not willing to do that, if it requires that then the guy from Ebay will hopefully do the right thing soon and just give me a refund.

I remember the older rev 1.0 boards had problems running at AGP 8x. The problem might be related, though that particular incompatibility resulted in no boot whatsoever.

You might want to try forcing the AGP slot to run at 4x just to see if it works.

Thats some good advice but the motherboard, Epok 8k7a only supports 4x, so its not a 8x problem. Add to that the fact that the bios states 1.3 so it should be fine even at 8x.

Yep I contacted him and asked him for a exchange or refund, he told me to try a few things, then I asked for a refund again and I have not heard from him in several days. Seems a bad seller Any ideas on how I could maybe get him to reconsider his silence?

You seem to have been more than patient with the seller, i hope you havent left positive feedback already. Tell him you will leave a negative if he does not comply with a refund, tell him nicely Also if theres no joy there then if you paid with paypal they have a scheme that almost always favours the buyer (not a good thing but good for you) where you will get a refund.

No, never use feedback for intimidation.

Your main tool is the "item not as described" report to ebay and paypal.

Read about this report on ebay and paypal and make sure you mark the deadline you have for filing each of those. You do not want to miss those deadlines.

Send one more clear message to the seller and explain everything you have done to solve the problem. Follow his instructions to solve the problem.

If you have exhausted all options and it still is not working, send him another message and tell him that you are going to file the report.

After you file the report, paypal will freeze his account. That will get his attention!
Follow the instructions that you will be given by paypal and ebay.

Throughout the process, always send factual messages. Never get personal.

Leave feedback long time after all of this has settled and you have cooled down. Never use feedback to get back at a bad seller or buyer.

if you used PayPal for the item then just create a case at PayPal and they will do refund for you in almost 99%. Just explain them all you have and already tried to contact sellers.
I'm not from PayPal so can't tell you for sure how it works.

Great advice all, I very much appreciate it. I am afraid I might have to hurry on the deadlines for Ebay and or Paypal as he took almost fifteen days to send it to me and it has been about seven more waiting on his replys. Not sure how long the deadlines are but I am going to check now.

Thank you all for the advice.

If you paid using a credit card through paypal then you are in luck. Also, threaten to report them to their local police department and the fbi internet fraud divison. This generally grabs the attention of most people. I know someone in Canada ripped me off and I told them my plan and they refunded my money ASAP.

have you tried removing the HSF unit, cleaning off of the thermal pad and applying some decent thermal paste?

back in october 2002 when i bought my Gigabyte GV-R9700PRO it had similar problems and couldn't complete a benchmark at all, I thought I had bought a AU$680 dud..but the first thing I tried was the above mention solution.

the card has been running strong since october 2002 and has never missed a beat and can run 3DMARK2003 in a loop for more than 48hrs in a closed ANTEC 1600SL case with an overclocked P4 3.06@3.4ghz with out any hassles what so ever.

Its always the little things that cause the most hassles.

My R360 9800 pro doesn't show up with temps in ATITT. Is there some way to get that to show up? -- J

I don't think so. Having the right GPU is not enough. There also needs to be some component(s) on the card to allow the temperature to show. Such components are not present on a 9800 pro.

You can flash the BIOS to a 9800 XT, then it will show temps. The actual card may not run at XT speeds, but you can overclock it with atitool or somthing. Google it, there are quite a few resources on flashing graphics card bios's.

I couldnt be bothered checking to see if my 9800 PRO was a R360 or not, so i flashed the BIOS anyways and got a 9800XT, that didnt run at XT speeds and didnt have a temp sensor, no advantage at all. Worked perfectly though. For the record my core was R350.

The only chance you have to get this going is if you still have any remnants of video drivers and/or overclocking tools left over from your previous video card. Many times an overclocking utility will leave a file in your system with clock specs from your previuos card. This causes bigtime problems with any new card installed.

Brand new install of Xp so no other drivers present. Still working on it though so please wish me luck.

And thanks again for all advice/suggestions. Although not sure I want to end up killing someone over sixty bucks .
