I don't think Mong is fear mongering per se, it's just that he's bought into the fear mongering. It's a subtle but important difference.

Somebody puked. TEHEBOLA!

I have to say that if there had been any doubt about how clueless the public is regarding health care matters, medical science and practice, this event removes it. Needlessly cowering and willfully ignorant- how did the species survive this long?

I've almost completely ignored all the Ebola reports, but I still gleaned enough to know that hysteria is not necessary.

Someone at work approached me Monday or Tuesday after the new iPhones were released. She asked if I had wiped mine with alcohol before using it. Immediately sensing an Internet hoax, I responded: "No. Why?"

Her:
"Oh no! Thousands of people are getting ebola from their new iPhones because its in the factory where they're made."

Me:
"Sounds like an Internet hoax for numerous reasons."

Her:
"No! Fox News reported on it!"

Me:
"That sounds like something an Internet hoax would also say. Unless Ebola has spread from Africa to Shenzhen in China, it's definitely not in the factory where iPhones are made. Secondly, it can't survive the trip in a dry environment with no body heat. Finally, if anyone had contracted it, they wouldn't be showing symptoms yet."

Sure enough...Snopes reports that this hoax is spreading on Facebook. From the start, it claimed there was a Fox News report "Friday night" (the night the phones were released). There was no such report.

I laughed when I read the text from the hoax. It claims the iPhones were assembled in Sierra Leone!

And it still keeps spreading right ?

Doesn't seem anyone is stopping it at the moment.

Spreading where? Not here. Nigeria? Comparing their situation and capabilities to ours would be like doing so with a stick and a tank yet they are managing. You are letting your reptilian brain win. Stop and breathe. I have training in health care and a doctorate in cell biology and a decent grasp of the situation. I didn't learn what I know by reading news and wiki. If I thought we were screwed I'd say so, and you know I would. I'm saying we're not, and if you think I'm wrong then learn enough to make a science based argument otherwise, but you will have to do better than anyone else because no one, not one person, has provided a rational argument to the contrary. Dude relax.

I think he's a good guy and not stirring the pot. No, I think he's in it and being stirred by others.

Perpetuating it is very nearly as bad.

I do see it as a real distinction. If you can calm down an agitated person you can often control panic, but if someone is intent on purposely causing fear for perverse enjoyment that one needs to be scorned.

I just try to pay attention to what is happening around me in the world.

Why I started that thread in June and look what is happening at the moment.

Forewarned is Forearmed.

It's good that you pay attention and it's good to take prudent action. It's not so good to get into a panic. I don't know what most people know but some of us aren't running the CDC but we do have a competent education and background which gives us an advantage in understanding the disease and how it moves around and makes people sick. This is an area that I have some knowledge of, as would TheVrolok. You can call me a fool or liar if you like, but I'm telling you that this is blown all out of proportion to the real threat it presents.

Can you detail why the current standard operating procedures for this type of infection are not sufficient?
If your one of the one in charge of the current screw ups, I could probably name very many.

You're back seems to be up for some reason as I haven't seen you even post here and you have many obviously.

Your name isn't vary familiar but apparently you've been around a long time.

I'm not in a panic.

Being a former Marine, was used to dealing with things like this, NBC gear etc.

The fact that the doctors over there wearing the gear have picked it up and everyone seems so casual about it has me concerned, not panicked.

One of my major concerns is people have that don't worry about it attitude, it's under control thing going on.

It just doesn't seem to be to me.

In charge of what now? I'm in charge of very little. I would appreciate it if you did name "very many."

Honestly not sure what you're trying to say here?

It's just the distinction between rational fear and irrational fear. Certainly we're all fearful of Ebola, but many of us have an irrational fear that is being spread unduly.

I don't think you understand what it's like to live in an area like that. I've seen my share of things and I'll tell you that no matter how disciplined you are exhaustion is your enemy. You make a mistake and you are exposed and might not know it. Wearing that gear in that kind of climate for who knows how many hours? I'm surprised the human organism can deal with it as well as it does. What then? After they are done they still come in contact with the environment and it's saturated. This isn't unexpected except by those who don't understand that it's expected. It surely is disappointing and a failure, but not of understanding of the basics.

I'll give you something you would have read more about over the years and that's near earth asteroids. Every so often someone comes up with a headline about some possible collision. Why isn't NASA in a panic? Why isn't the President ordering nukes launched into space? We're going to die and no one cares! Oh it doesn't happen? Look at the moon,it's covered with craters. We even saw pictures of a comet slamming into Jupiter. Of course it happens and everyone is so relaxed.

Well it turns out that the asteroid isn't and never was going to hit the earth, and someone could draw you a picture if needed. But what if they didn't? What if they just said it wasn't. Would that alter the course of the object? Of course it wouldn't, but one rock flying through space is an easy concept. Little organisms you really don't know anything about except they can kill you is another thing entirely, but like the space rock the science doesn't care if you understand.

There's nothing surprising or unexpected in any of this, at least to people who know about such things. Why aren't scientists and medical experts upset? For the very same reasons that astronomers aren't running around in fear about that big stone. We really aren't stupid.

Somehow you lost me from the start.

We don't currently don't have a bunch of near earth asteroids hitting the planet at the moment.

We do have Ebola spreading.

You're logic is flawed.

I really don't know what point you're shooting at right now, really.

Ebola patients are probably infiltrating Europe, headed for America.

Don't be ridiculous, everyone knows that's the Muslims.

And MongGrel I love you, but step back for a while. It was just an example of informed experts not being worried about something that may cause a bunch of laymen to worry.

Might not surprise me, hell if the guys would wear a strap on suicide bomb like they have been for years, taking a trip to Liberia and then to the US and just walking around later would be an easier and more effective thing once they go active.

Get some of those guys with the passports to do it.

Funnily enough I was just thinking about that last night after reading something about the Hajj, except I was thinking about how a small suicide group could infect up to millions of muslims. Ironically, I don't think anyone hates the muslims enough to pull that kind of thing.
