So its unto 80+ people now. That is the problem, the threat is not that great if taken care of appropriately but unfortunately its being handled by the most incompetent and lazy people, who just care about money, the medical industry. Its the second most worthless entity after the government, its plagues by rampant incompetence.
Most people here who are not worried and believe the threat is not that great, you are correct, the threat does not come from the severeness of the disease but from the inefficiency and incompetency and bureaucracy of the people trying to handle it.

You guys sure the US would be just fine? I'm not. Also, I feel a little sick. What should I do? Wait for the anal bleeding?

Also, why do you guys bash the UN? Can you imagine the political rock tumbler they must find themselves in every day? Amazing they ever get anything done. Every decision they make, they will be burning somebody and helping someone else. Lose lose, all day every day.

So you know more than the United Nations? :hmm:

Didn't see this response.

There is a chance it can happen. There's a chance anything can happen. That chance is miniscule.

Let's go back to basics here. A cell has receptors that act as a lock. A virus has proteins that act as a key. If the virus has a "key" that interacts with that cells "lock" it can get in and begin replication.

Ebola lacks the necessary proteins to unlock the epithelial cells in the lungs, throat etc... as I said earlier. That means it can't take hold in those areas. Since Ebola already has ample cells within the body that it CAN unlock, there's no reason for the virus to mutate. There are almost no instances where a virus has actually changed the type of cells it can interact with.

Each mutation a virus makes is at its own peril. The next mutation could render the virus completely non-pathogenic, meaning harmless. Ebola is already incredibly effective and has no reason to make such a mutation.

Also, if you look at historical evidence, no virus in a natural setting has changed it's method of transmission. Again Ebola already has a very effective transmittal method so any change to that would again be to its own potential detriment. There's no reason for it to make such a change.

So when the UN says there is a chance, they are right. There is a chance. One little change in a virus could alter its transmittal method. It has happened in controlled experimentation. It's just incredibly remote and highly unlikely given everything we know about how virus have behaved in the past.

Introverts with personal space issues will be the only ones left alive. We're going to reshape the world in our image.

I am sure one day someone will be posting here over and over wondering where everyone else is.

Those of you saying that nothing should be done to quarantine the exposed until they're symptomatic, do you believe that at the first sniffle, a plastic bubble falls out of the sky to shield others from the virus?

Or does mom wipe her child's runny nose and oops, now she's infected. As someone else mentioned, if I knew I had been exposed I'd voluntarily quarantine for a few weeks. How selfish would a person be to risk infecting others?

A few days later, I still can't comprehend that this original d-bag handled his relative who was very clearly dying of ebola and was able to hop on a plane and fly back to the united states. what da fuck.

And the other people that assisted him handling the pregnant dying lady have all died.

Now Liberia is suing this guy for failing to accurately fill out his pre-international-flight questionnaire.

The thing is, had he answered "nope, haven't been around anyone with Ebola", they'd have zero ways of knowing he had contracted the virus until he was pretty much about to die from it. It takes around 3 weeks before you show any symptoms, and even then aren't contagious and they aren't particularly bad (fever).

Ya... it bugs me that he was allowed to go there and come back, and that he was there voluntarily. Like really, dafuq?

Imagine if Ebola hits India. That would spread like wildfire, 10x faster then liberia.

Sometimes, I think, people forget that hygiene is a learned and taught concept. You pick up a lot of it from guberment PSAs and education. Developing countries aren't known for either.

At the same time, just go into a public washroom to see how well it works in a developed country...

I find it almost amusing that I've seen a couple articles where Texas is priding itself as being "one of 17 states" that's prepared for Ebola. Yet someone who visited one of the African countries where it's a problem showed up with symptoms of the disease on the 24th, and wasn't hospitalized until the 26th. That's a HUGE wtf. My wife saw that in the news the other day and from her reaction, it was clear she found that to be incompetent.

Not if you're the one that doesn't sanitize the equipment when you're done. Those wipes are there for a reason!

I do but not everybody does. I need to find out what is in those spray bottles. I guess I need to clean before and after.

I don't have any wipes in my local Bally's. Very few people use towels too. Either way it's impossible to use the bench because so many people are waiting in line to use them. The gym is nasty and filthy. A lot of equipment is broken and doesn't get fixed.

After I cancelled my subscription, Bally's is bombarding me with offers to sign up again for $100/year. Screw them. Not worth even at that price.

Unless I missed something new I don't think the guy lives here in the States. His sister lives here in Dallas. She went to visit him back in Sept and shortly after he quit his job out of the blue. This isn't confirmed but I bet during her visit they planned on him fleeing the country to the US and possibly hide out with her. He just never planned on getting infected before his flight.

The people going WTF at him going and coming back, isn't he Liberian? As in, he's not an American who went to Liberia, he's from there and was here visiting?

But work needs me! I really fucking hate people that are very sick and still try to go into work or school. I realize some people do it because they don't get paid sick leave (and OMG can't miss school), but that's why comprehensive medical care should include compensated sick leave as it's to the benefit of all.

The thing is, had he answered "nope, haven't been around anyone with Ebola", they'd have zero ways of knowing he had contracted the virus until he was pretty much about to die from it. It can take up to that time. This guy had noticeable symptoms within a week I believe.

What's fucked up is he went to the hospital and was released and then had an ambulance come pick him up after he started vomiting outside the apartment complex. The hospital was even informed that he had just been to Liberia.

Don't worry, Rick Perry's in charge. If he has to, he'll revoke funding to be sure that they'll get it right.

See the link above. Fucking idiots knew he'd been to Liberia and yet somehow the people in charge of his care were not made aware of it so they just released him.
