Regardless of the effects on the environment, which I frankly don't give a shit about, the Japanese whalers are breaking international law. This is unfair to other countries. The Japanese do not own those whales nor have any right to them.

If the Japanese can hunt those whales without repercussions, all other countries should be able to also. It's an unfair business & economic advantage.

Ok i'll bite, which law are the whaler's breaking?

Why don't the whalers just kill the protesters? Run them over with the ship, shoot them, whatever. Could they even be held accountable in international waters?

how is this eco-terrorists getting what they deserve?

:confused;

Really. From what I saw on the video, that whaling ship smashed into their ship on purpose.

Now the guy is being held against his will for presenting a bill-----according to the definition above, wouldn't Japan be the pirates in this case?

I don't know how that stuff works. But it'd be great if they could just work out those problems however they wanted. I tend to think that big money corporations would triumph over idealistic green peacers.

What I want to know is how the hell he even managed to board? If I were the Japs, I would have just drove away or cut his rope or whatever as he was attempting to board and watched him drop into the water.

Why not just toss him overboard after he boards?

It's a shame the 'green peacers' have to resort to these tactics. I find the tactics dangerous, distasteful and possibly illegal.

However, noone else is doing a fucking thing to stop the whaling which is a travesty. At some point we're going to totally fuck our ecosystem, whether it's whales, global warming (climate change, fuck, whatever), the ozone hole or whatever, and noone wants to listen to anyone talking rationally about any of it. The only time it seems like you get a message across these days is if you're screaming it at someone through a bullhorn.

To be honest, he did do damage to the Japanese ship. Reports had said he managed to cut through or otherwise circumvent the Japanese ship's anti-boarding nets.

That said... meh, whatever. If the econauts really want to start protecting shit, they need to be buying submarines and torpedoes instead of fiberglass speed boats.

I agree with the first part, however you do realize they take a sustainable portion of the population, right? It isn't like they're trawling the oceans killing any whale that they find all year long in hundreds of ships across the entire pacific. I agree that some species should not be fished at all (any endangered/threatened species ie. Fin whale) but there are literally over a million Minke whales which are a Least Concerned species and make up the vast majority of the "research" catch.

Whaling is subsidized by the gov't here because it isn't economically sustainable. The meat tastes terrible and most Japanese people haven't eaten it more than a few times in their lives. They push it onto school lunch menus (where I've had it twice) because the demand just isn't there in restaurants or supermarkets.

After 2.5 years in Japan, living in three prefectures (including the 2nd poorest, and a fishing village there no less) I've yet to see it at a supermarket or in any menu at any restaurant I've been to.

Sustainable fishing is what should be protected. Where are the protesters complaining about Spanish fleets fishing cod to extinction off the coast of Newfoundland? Norway and Iceland both conduct hunts themselves yet Sea Shepherd doesn't ram ships in the North Sea.

Non-violence works. Raising awareness in political circles, both internationally and domestically here in Japan should be the main goal if you want to reduce whaling. Once Sea Shepherd crosses the line into violence or endangering lives, they marginalize themselves and lose any credibility they might bring to their cause.

I am morally against Japan's position on whaling, but this guy is a fucking idiot and deserves what he gets.

For doing what exactly?

I am also morally opposed to Japan's position on whaling. FUCK the Japanese, I don't care if they never kill another whale because groups like this hound the shit out of them for the rest of eternity. They have NO right to hunt whales.

Illegally boarding another ship? They should have tossed his dumb ass overboard.

What's the punishment for that I wonder...

Around here it's probably death by hanging. Or a bullet to the head because we all know what badass, gun-toting, crime-fighters, atoters are.

Shh, you're not allowed to bring reason into whaler threads. Either hate on the Japanese and wish for their brutal deaths or troll them or gtfo.

The Dude and the Ship's Crew should both be Arrested and Charged. Then the International Community should do their damn Jobs and stop Whaling. Until that time

Go! Sea Shepherd! Go!

He might've not been pirating, but there must be some maritime law against boarding a ship without authorization. He deserves whatever is coming to him.
