ECS K7S5A and Duron 950 worth o/cing?

I recently bought the k7S5a mobo and Duron 950 and i've read this board isnt too great at overclocking so i opted to use a simple program (cpufsb) to o/c my increasing the fsb. this however proved to be not-so great as i only got it to run at 1050. I haven't overclocked a computer by unlocking before and was wondering if the trouble would even be worth it. I'm using a volcano 6cu and have crucial 256mb pc133 cas2 ram.

I would like opinions if unlocking and overclocking it would be worth it as opposed to just increasing the fsb.

You can download the overclocking BIOS for this machine so you can change the FSB in the BIOS, instead of having to use CPUFSB. I'm sure someone will have the link for it if you ask.

I have a ECS K7AMA board (fairly similar in features to the K75SA), I managed to overclock my Athlon 1.4 to 1.53Ghz, using an FSB of 146 - runs perfectly stable but I personally don't think its worth trying to overclock this board, because with all the hassle I was only able to achieve about a 15% speed increase, hardly noticable

i'm not all that against having to use CPUFSB, i was just wondering how successful i could possibly be if i had overclocked traditionally. I mean i was stuck with a p2 400 for the longest time and i just finally upgraded, so 1050mhz for me is plenty of speed, but more is always better I guess i'll have to wait till i can afford more o/c-able parts.

Pardon my ignorance, but could someone tell me how to overclock the Duron 950 with the ECSK7S5A motherboard?

Do I need to do anything special besides bump voltage and increase FSB?

Will a retail heatsink be sufficient?

Hey pigseye2,
just pencil the open L7 bridges and use CHFSB or OCworkbench O/Cing BIOS or CPUcool to overclock the FSB. I don't think you'll have to worry about upgrading your HS/F though because as Mitzi mentioned the overclock is some what limited without drastic board mods.

i have a very similar setup as you.

k7s5a
duron 950
crucial 256mb pc2100
volcano 5

i can run this duron at 139fsb.
which gets me over 1.3ghz

for me that's 39% o/c. which isn't half bad.

you just gotta make sure you have a good psu backing this mobo.

i'm using enhance's 350w.
it's got 220w at 3.3+5
a good psu at a dirt cheap price.

Thanks guys. I'm now running at 1.2GHz and it seems to be working great.

I tried 133 but had some lockups. WIlll keep trying but I'm happy with a 25% OC on a $99 Mb and CPU.

If I am not mistaken (please correct me if I am wrong), unlocking the CPU still will not help you because the K7S5A does not allow you to change the multiplier. I just picked up one of these boards & put in an old Duron 750 that was lying around. For the low price of the board, no overclocking is still OK with me.

Yeah I dont think you can change the multiplier on the k7s5a but you sure could bump the fsb on the durons. Might need a voltage mod though.

i have the same board but im running a 1.2 tbird. i once tried the pencil trick but i killed the chip... perhaps static. had to buy another processor. is there a way to flash the bios or go through SOFTWARE to overclock this chip? and if so, do i still have to unlock it with the infamous pencil trick??
