ECS K7S5A bootup problem

Hi I just put together my first pc with Athlon 1700+ and ECS K7S5A mb, and I had one weird problem.
When I power the system up, the system will hang after showing "F1 Setup, ... Esc to skip mem test",
but before the detection of Hard Drive. But after I press the reset button a few times (1 to 3), the
system will start up fine. After it's running, it's rock solid (at least for now I haven't seen any crash yet).
Anybody know what the cause of the problem? Your insight is appreciated.

my friends that I built does the same thing it never works on the first try just the 2nd possible the third?

I have the same motherboard and have not had that problem, however, I did manage to hang the thing once. What I would recommend is to move the J4 jumper from 2-3 to 1-2 for twenty seconds or more, then move it back to 2-3. This will clear the CMOS and should allow you to boot properly.

What are the systems specs, including nics, sound, OS etc.
What bios are you running?

The specs are as following:
Athlon 1700+
ECS K7S5A (I haven't checked the revision yet)
WD 5400rpm 60GB HD
512 mb crucial ddr pc2100 memory
onboard sound, Lan
nVidia ti200 64mb ddr video card
...

What's your power supply. This board is picky about PSU's.

This should work, but it might not be necessary. When adding or removing harddrives, my K7S5A has always done this. I, like everyone else I've seen talk about it, cleared the CMOS and reset all our BIOS settings again with the new harddrive configuration. A couple weeks ago, I just let the board sit there in that hung state for a couple minutes and it corrected IDE device list by itself. On the other hand, the CMOS jumper is pretty easy to move around if the case is open, so it might be faster to reset your settings than wait for it to correct itself. =P

Anyways, try waiting a little longer next time...I've waited for it a couple times now, and I don't think it ever took longer than a minute or two. If it sits for 5 minutes and doesn't do anything, you're forced to clear CMOS and hope that the problem never resurfaces...if so, RMA it...lots of bad boards out there, but when you get a good one you're set.

aye, try either flashing to the latest bios and then clearing the CMOS and reconfiguring your BIOS...or simply clear your current CMOS/bios settings and reconfigure them...though if that doesn't work, try the former suggestion.

also, try moving your dimm in another bank...sometimes that works.

then there's several bios settings that could potentially cause your problem...load the fail-safe settings and try that...if that works when the others don't, it's gotta be a bios setting issue.
