Today my friend got fed up with his PII 450mhz Dell and came to me for help. We headed to Fry's and picked up the 1.2ghz Duron and ECS board for $99 special. We put it in a case with a 300watt Enermax power supply, tweaked the BIOS a little (but did not flash it from the 12\15\01 BIOS file it came with), and installed Windows XP. I was very surprised after all the problems I have read with this board at how easy it was to set up. It was a very stable board and I would definitely use it again and reccomend it to others. By the way for those interested, he is also running 512mb PC133 ram, a 64mb Geforce2 MX400, Aureal Vortex sound, and using the on-board lan. Very impressed. That's all if anyone cares.

Yeah that frys combo is a nice deal for anyone looking to upgrade an older computer. I bought the same combo a few weeks ago for that price and everything went smoothly.

I've built 3 rigs with the ECS. 2 with XP 1600's. 1 with a 1.2 duron. I fried the board with the duron. No idea what happened. I have to try and RMA it now. Before that it was stable as a rock, and worked great for a couple of months. I'd use them again, I think this was just a fluke thing that happened, from one reboot to the next.

The earlier models had some problems but any newer ones are just plain unbeatable.. also the BIOS upgrades have made them much much more stable and they were quite stable to begin with..

I have only good experience with ECS K7S5A(L) mobos. I´ve built 5 or 6 PC already based upon this board (the price is just unbelieveable) with various CPUs and RAM - from Athlon 900 and SDR to XP 1700+ and DDR. Everything is running without any problem, the oldest one for more than seven months now - no complaints from the customers. I think that the occasional problems were linked with early PCB revisions and no currently sold K7S5A(L) should cause any problem.

Eventually this board will be known for it's ease of installation, stability, and of course price, NOT the host of problems I've always read about but never experienced with the two I owned (one a very early version and the other bought a couple weeks ago).

I've had absolutely no problems with the K7S5A ever...I can't believe a sub-$100 board could run so stable and problem-free. Despite the lack of overclocking options, the K7S5A has got to be the best value in an AMD motherboards.

got my ecs in january. initially i had many problems with it, but changing to name-brand ram fixed EVERYTHING. It's amazing how one little bad part can completely mess up your comp. needless to say, i am now completely satisfied with it.

Rushed on the market like a cheap motherboard it is. A very good product underneath though.

I am glad to be hearing such good comments about this mobo because i should have mine within the week. Pairing it with an athlon XP 1600+ in an AMD approved 300 watt ps case, with 256MB of pc133 by corsair, hope wverything goes smooth for me too
p.s. Please wish me luck, its only the second comp i will have built...

The only problem I encountered with mine is that it did not want to disable the on-board sound (even though the BIOS has it disabled, Win98se kept detecting it & prompting a 'new hardware detected' box). I finally gave up & stopped trying to use a soundcard and went with the on-board sound. This is not my main system, so the on-board sound will be fine. It is running a Duron 750 with 128mb PC133 & a 32MB GeForce 2 GTS.
