ECS K7S5A Lockup problems - PROBLEM FIXED

Ok peeps...Ive read hundreds of posts on this board...decided to get it...but now Im having some problems...

specs:

MB stock bios
XP 1600+
WBK Globalwin Fan
ASII
Kingston single 512 2100 DDR running 133/133
Radeon 7500
Maxtor 30 gig ata100 7200 RPM
Lite On 24X10
Sony 52X CDrom

Random lockups running large Photoshop files...and once in a while the video goes black..but the computer stays on...

HELP...this system is almost stable...runs for about 10 minutes then locks..

What steps should I take..settings..etc..

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

It is starting to become common knowledge that the K7S5A doesn't seem to like the new Radeons. Other than that, I would start with a BIOS flash to the newest BIOS release. If that doesn't fix it, the only other likely problem would be the RAM.

I've read about the Radeon problems some people are having..but again read about the Radeon being ok in other systems...baffling isnt it...

I'm hoping it's the ram...I'm going to through in an extra stick of 256 pc133 to see if it remedies it..

I'll take all suggestions into mind.....HELP!

You don't say what your temps are or what kind of PSU you have. Also, have you applied the lates AGP patch, v1.08 I believe. You can get it from the SiS web site.

I would flash to latest bios in case any hint of rumored 7500 radeon compatabilities actually exist...otherwise have you ruled out the radeon 7500 isn't faulty, since video seems to turn off randoming or when trying to open video intensive files.

What duvie said. If you can test the ATI on another setup, do it. I had a similar experience with lockups recently(different parts), and it was the video card. Also, check voltages.

Radeon's have problems with ECS K7S5A's, not just the newer ones. My Radeon LE's locking up all over the place in games. Never used to do that on my Asus P3B-F. It's quite annoying I think i'll be switching back to my good ole Intel setup soon.

The radeon le may be another issue altogether due to it is a third party product...I would not judge whole ATI radeon line based on the le...


I ha donly heard of issues with 7500 eventhough many chimed in to say they have no issues with 7500...I haven't heard anyone mention issues with older 32mb and 64mb radeon ddr boards, or the newer 8500 cards...I think pabster has one and has no issues...

Sounds like mine(when I had that board). Back off the FSB to 100MHz memory to 100MHz. Can you reproduce the problem in that setup? I couldn't. My board ran fine as long as FSB was 100MHz, but no way in the heck I was going to compromise with running my 1.4GHz proc. at 1050MHz.

most likely ram. Put it to the default settings (cas 2.5, normal rating, etc) and try again. Try different sticks of ram. K7S5A gives you headaches when it comes to ram.

Problem fixed...

installed WinXP Pro and all the problems went away...

Glad to hear you resolved your problem Also glad to hear it wasn't the board, really makes you wonder how many issues are blamed on this board unjustly

agreed...I know I did all the precautions before install...battery...bios...I've had the machine up for 3 days straight drilling it with large Photoshop files and it hasn't crashed at all...temps are good...all seems well...and fast as hell too.
