Hi,

My problem is that the motherboard won't post unless I set the memory and cpu clock to 100 mhz, it won't post to 133 fsb no matter what I do. I checked this with two different sticks of memory, and the times the computer does post to 133 mhz fsb, it wont restart or even reset. I have an enermax 350 PSW and 256 MB samsung memory link I have the model K4H280838C.

Thanks.

So is your CPU ready for 133 MHz frontside bus at all? Or are you just trying to set the RAM bus speed up?

Hi,

I have the latest BIOS version and my CPU is an Athlon XP 1700+ The most stable speed I could get it to boot is to 124 mhz fsb, but I've noted that my cpu temp hits 60 degrees celcius or more, could this be the problem?

Thanks.

I had the same problem ...
So, upon some usual tweaking around, I figured if I disabled ACPI, the system would start working properly...

do that and see if that helps.

ACPI, where can I disable that? I'm pretty sure I'm not using that

Hi,

I already disabled ACPI, but the computer keeps resetting itself. I have tried booting to 133 FSB even with the case open and still no luck. I have a fan at the back of the case blowing air out and the HSF is installed properly, I think that this board does not like my samsung memory.

Thanks for the replies.

just had the same problem with this k7s5a when I tried to replace my 750 duron with a 1600xp. It had reboots and hanging when i tried to set it at 133/133. I had the latest cheepos bios then.

I frequented a couple of websites about this board and they basically had 2 suggestions

1. remove the chipset cooler and replace the tape with arctic silver or grease of your choice then use super glue at the edges. The theory being the 133 bus was overheating the chipset. I did this still the same problem.

2. get a better power supply. I was using a enlight 300w ps that came with my enlight newegg case. Replaced this with a no name 400 w ps and everything is working well. I can even go to 143/143 with no problems.

I know you have a good power supply but be sure to check your rails specially 3.3 and 5 volt lines.

I can see you also have some heat issues which could very well be your problem since you do have a good power supply. I would personally remove the heatsink ,clean it then re-apply conductive grease.

I usually get 40 to 48c temp on my cpu with prime 95 torture test and 3d mark se looping demo.

peace fixed link

Hi,

The voltage in the BIOS read as follows:

VCC 2.5V=2.464V
VCC 3.3V=3.312V
VCC 5V=4.972V
+12V=12.288V
SB 3V=3.568V
-12V=11.557V
SB 5V=5.241V
VBAT=3.658V

Do you think these voltages are ok?

Thanks.

at a glance your psu numbers look okay, check out the psu faq in my link to learn more than you want to about power supply rails and and tco ect.

try re-seating your cpu first since 60 is abit high for a non overclocked 1700 xp (xp's are suppposed to run cooler than the T-birds), is the cpu fan spinning?

also to see if it might be a power issue, remove other devices ,extra harddrives, extra dvd or cdrw drives, and see if that helps you boot at 133 do you have 5 case fans? you get the picture

good luck

My system is very similar to your's(K7S5A XP1700+overclock to 1900+, Enermax 350W, 2 sticks of PNY 128MB with Samsung chips, 2 HD) and it's been on 24/7 with no problem. Your CPU temp seem kinda high. Which BIOS version are you using? Might I suggest something drastic? Since the ECS K7S5A and the PCCHIPS 830LR are the same board you can use PCCHIPS 830LR BIOS on the the ECS K7S5A( I have done this a few times already). PCCHIPS have a new BIOS for the PCCHIPS 830LR(ECS K7S5A) released about couple weeks ago you might have better chance with PCCHIPS 830LR BIOS. Just a suggestion but good luck...

It isn't the voltage levels folks, it's the quality of regulation that separates the good from the poor PSUs. Unfortunately this cannot be measured with the integrated hardware monitors, you'd need an oscilloscope to see that. Go with something that's on AMD's list of recommended stuff.

Hi,

I was about to hit this board with a hammer, I downloaded the Pcchips BIOS and it worked!!! Funny thing, I've never liked their boards, but I didn't had any problems with them either.

Thanks.

You might as well have used the same BIOS from the ECS site ... it's identical, except for the name string.

have you tried running memtest86? its a little proggie that boots from a floppy disk (can get it at memtest86.com)

the reason i ask is it might not be the cpu thats having problems running at 133mhz, but it might be the ram (even though your ram is rated for that speed it might be defective and only funtion at a slower speed)

but if you do want a new board i would get the epox 8k3a+ (very fast/stable board and its not plagued with powersupply problems like your k7s5a)

Hi,

I've downloaded memtest, I had no problems, I also have not applied thermal grease to the HSF, I didn't think this was a problem, do you think this will lower the cpu temp enough to solve this problem?

Thanks.

GNNNNNNNNN ...

so match for wasting our time. WELL OF COURSE YOU NEED SOME KIND OF THERMAL COMPOUND between two surfaces that are supposed to transfer heat.

Hi,

I applied Artic Silver III, the cpu temp dropped 10 degrees, still have the same problem, also removed the chipset heatsink, took off the thermal tape that it had, cleaned everything and glued it with Artic Silver glue, same problem. Tried booting with the bare components, CPU, memory, still same problem, what is left is try another PSW or another memory, I'll update it here if anything changes.

Thanks all.

Running for the amount of time you did without heatsink compound might very well have fried your CPU or other component. Can you try a different CPU (with paste applied to the core!!!) and see if that works?

no the 1700+ comes w/ a Heatsink Thermal Pad already applied thats supposed to work fine. I have his same setup (K7S5A w/ 1700+). Mine works extremely well and I have a 250watt PS. Right now I have an OC BIOS set to 150mhz FSB and RAM using PC133. I get around 140* F at full load and around 128 idle. Thats with no case fans, and a CompUSA HSF and Thermal Grease. Its stable running XP pro and it hasnt crashed yet (so far i've been up for 1 day, im seeing how long my uptime goes overclocked this far).

Anyway, back to your problem. It sounds like its more a CPU problem then a motherboard problem. I have your same problem, but when setting my FSB to 166 lol. You might try to get your hands on another athlon XP and try it.

good luck, post back.
