CinDSL,

Where did you get the description? Because the link I have says 184-pin DIMM, and your link's description has 240 pin, which means it is a DDR2.

Newegg had this deal about 1.5 months ago for the same combo. I am still waiting on my rebate. No insight on combo, as it is still sitting in box.

Meh. You want really cheap w/o rebate hassles you can get a 754 + 3000+ from NewEgg for about $58 shipped.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813135060

754 is a dead platform and a 3200+ A64 is really the max you could go on it. It is not that great of an upgrade path for someone who is on Socket A, especially since they most likely have an AGP video card, so they'll probably need a new video card. Sure they'll save on RAM. But 2GB of DDR2 is only like $40(cheaper w/ rebates).

Not sure where I got that, but...

I *think* you're right!

I'll edit that post...

S754 doesn't support DDR2 memory so if it's included it would be an issue. I'd research if they made a change and I was wrong but since the memory controller is built into the CPU and they haven't made any S754 announcements in some time I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet that it's DDR1.

Yup, look at the Title......"GF6100-M754 mATX Motherboard & Athlon 64 3200+ Processor/Memory Bundle".

And...."Memory Installed 512MB DDR-333 RAM "

This is a Geforce 6100 chipset....which is good.

The Newegg deal posted by Klinky1984 is a great deal, but no free DDR and an SIS chipset .

I'll pass on both, but good for an ubber-cheap build either way.

This is indeed an ubber cheap build. I built my nephew a bundle from an anandtech post, which was ECS nforce3 board with A64 3200+. We OCed to 2.4gigs and the things been literally running 24/7 for more than a year now. He has been doing anything and everything on it, except playing the latest games. But he plays a lot of games with that 5700fx AGP card. He has no complaints.

The newegg deal is with a Sempron chip, and this is with an Athlon. I know that the rebate stinks, but I still would choose a "better" (not sure how much better, other than the cache size) chip with the rebate. I think this will make a nice "throw-around" second computer for a lot of folks who has DDR and an extra hd sitting around.

By the way, from the looks of it, I think the PCB board is purple.

pricewise it's about $100 after tax, so you cant find a bundle cheaper than that. You'll definitely won't get the best performance per price.

DDR2 memory isn't much of an issue now (you can get 2gb PC-6400 for a lil over $20 after rebate). You can always get an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140/2160/2180, which are easily overclockable and runs on the core2 architecture. In addition, overclocking is much safer now. You change some settings and see if it works. if it doesn't, reset the cmos and try again. As for the motherboard, we had the Abit IP35-E for about $70 after rebate (P35 chipset, ICH9, solid board). Sure you'll be spending about $150-$200, but even at stock 1.6/1.8ghz would run circles over any S754. As for the rebates, i've yet to get the IP35-e rebate, but i got the rebates for the memory in timely order (crucial ballistix).

I didn't know they had legs.

But seriously, the E2200/ECS combo usually costs $99.99 unless Fry's is having a special sale. If you wait a couple of weeks, you might find it for $79.99.

As for the Celeron 430/ECS combo, I've seen it for $49.99. After the recent Intel price cuts, I'm waiting for Fry's to sell it for $39.99.

On Wednesday, I got an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with an ECS GEFORCE6100PM-M2 for $49.99 along with a Corsair XMS 2x1GB PC2-6400 memory kit for $19.99 after rebate (plus tax),. I think that's the combination that really kills the $69.99 Socket 754 deal.

But remember, not everyone has a local Fry's store.

If I had Fry's near my home in the Philadelphia area, I would not have wasted any time posting this. Really. The website used to have some bundles, but I haven't seen one in a while. If you guys and gals know of any, let me know.

Ummmm...as a person who just left Socket 754, I would have to say, DO NOT BUY THIS.

Wait for a Fry's bundle with an ECS motherboard and an E2800. BSEL and vCore mod that processor to 3ghz, and its all good.

I'm sorry, but I don't know of any. That's why I believe your original post has merit. I don't mean to discourage you from posting hot deals.
