Eddie Murray and Gary Carter were voted today into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

Those who failed to get in include Bruce Sutter and (my favorite player) Ryne Sandberg, who was on the ballot for the first time.

No way Gary Carter should have made it. I last decade or so half the people voted in don't belong.

Why shouldn't he have made it?

Carter hit .262 with 324 homers and 1,225 RBI in 19 seasons. These are not the stats of a HOFer IMHO.

Then where do you draw the cut offs?

You need to take a look at the time when he played AND other catchers that played with him along with catchers that came before him.

He also was one of the best defensive catchers of all-time saving 154 runs above average with his glove (as per baseballprospectus.com.) His career EQA was .280 which is exceptional for a catcher. It is all about putting it into context, and Carter is one of the games' greats.

Of the catchers that played in Carter's era the only one that should be in the HOF is Johnny Bench. Carter was above average but not worthy of the HOF. Next your going the tell me that Lance Parish is a HOFer.

I do not believe Parrish is a HOF er, but he is dang close. You ever actually look at his 1979-1986 peak? That is 8 seasons of offensive dominance combined with gold-glove defense. You better start researching before you make blanket statements.

Don't know why, but for couple seconds there I thought I saw Eddie Murphy and Gary Coleman made it to the Hall of Fame. LOL

Your crazy!!

Per Jason Staryk at espn.go.com:

By last year, Carter had more than doubled his 1998 vote total -- and crept within 11 votes of election. No one has ever gotten that close and not made it into the Hall of Fame. So you have to figure this is his year. Right?

But you never know -- because how the heck has it taken him this long in the first place? What we all ought to know by now is this: Carter and Carlton Fisk had essentially the same career. Fisk's was longer. Carter's was better.

He had more 100-RBI seasons than Fisk (4-2), had more 20-homer seasons than Fisk (9-8), won more Gold Gloves than Fisk (3-1) and started more All-Star games than Fisk (8-7).

So if you can explain why Fisk is in the Hall and Carter isn't, your next assignment is to explain Stonehenge.

Eddie Murray and Gary Carter were two of my favorite players growing up.
Murray because I grew up in Baltimore and he was a huge part of the Orioles way.
I was a baseball catcher for 10 years and I admired what he did. He and Rick Dempsey defined a catchers role.

Gary Carter had a good career for a catcher.

Fisk is in the Hall of Fame and had similar numbers as Carter.

Though Fisk's career is longer, but Gary Carter didn't hit one of the most memorable home run in world series history.

And good for Eddie Murray

Its about time Carter got in...he is def. worth the hall of fame...

<---hopes he goes in wearing a NYM hat, but doubts it

as for sandberg...he will get in...a lot of people don't vote for them to save first year acceptances for the greatest of the great...I bet he gets in next year even though he got so few this year...its stupid but it happens

Both are very deserving. But until Pete Rose is back in baseball and in the Hall Of Fame, the HOF is a joke.

7 people thought Darryl Kile belongs in the Hall of Fame? I'm sorry, I respected him as a pitcher on a rival team to my Braves, and I, along with the rest of the baseball world mourned his passing, but dying while being an active player does not sound like justifiable merit to me for the Hall of Fame. He wasn't even one of the premier pitchers in his time. For a couple seasons he was close to being an elite pitcher with that nasty curveball of his, but if Tom Glavine is "questionable" right now for the Hall of Fame, no way Darryl Kile should have even gotten sympathy votes. We paid our respects, let him rest in peace.

Then again, baseball is the weirdest of all sports. Babe Ruth, a national icon, not even a unanimous choice. Neither was Ted Williams, Joe D., Warren Spawn, Walter Johnson, and neither will Cal Ripken, Barry Bonds, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, etc.

Damn, why do i like this game so much when it seems so utterly stupid at times

he decides what team he represents, not major league baseball. Bud Selig would probably have him go in as a Brewer anyways

Actually players are no longer allowed to officially decide, after the whole Devil Rays debacle. Although I am pretty sure they would let him have the choice, which the HOF would then approve.

Maybe when people stop buying the "hustle" and start buying the facts will we see this issue, born out of ignorance, die.

Grich for Cooperstown!

Gary Carter is a definite HOF'er. Glad to see he got in. Those Mets teams were so fun to watch back in the 80s.
