wow he was .. YOUNG. And - that i know of - he wasn't one of those ridiculous abusers that rock has.

VH was very, VERY influential in the world of music, and i'm not just saying that. His contribution to music cannot be overstated; Eruption is still a rite of passage for every guitar player, and a number of his solos are considered fundamental knowledge for a professional guitarist.

.. and, i hate to say this, but he did help legitimize "modern" rock with his Michael Jackson collaboration.

Me, as a guitar player, VH had such a delicate, exquisite touch, which very, very few can replicate, and i think he will be remembered as one of the few greats.

please enjoy kent carl levi playing ATBL - maybe the only 'tuber that i've hear get to the same level as VH:

Back in their club days before they became famous, Eddie would play with his back to crowd when he did the two hand tapping thing so the crowd couldn't see what he was doing....I would have loved to watched some of those shows when he did this...Randy Rhoads and George Lynch were all part of that scene back then and they would often watch each other's shows...too bad I was only around 7 years old and didn't live anywhere near LA

Wow, sucks like the rest of this year sucks, BTW included in your link is Eddie's solo on Micheal Jackson's
"Beat it", MJ was smart to hire him, no one else could have added what he did, pushed that song like a MOFO.
Didn't even "hire" him, Quincy Jones called EVH and he came and did it for free. Actually rearranged the song to what it is now. Got paid nothing.

Most influential guitarist ever, IMO. Changed the whole world of guitar.
Influenced thousands of players. Even to this day, it's a rite of passage for kids to learn Eruption and other EVH songs.
More players today use EVH equipment than anyone else, and I'd say it's not close. Not a studio worth its salt that doesn't have EVH amps. His amps and guitars are used by LOADS of professionals, people who could have their own line of endorsed equipment.
The outpouring from those people is unbelievable.

Man cancer sucks. RIP EVH. This thread is otherwise cool, never knew Eddie played with 2 hands - thought he was some insanely fast guitar playing freak of nature.

Happy birthday to me

Guy was a jerk, but I loved him for teaching me so much. Legends aren't supposed to die.

Happy Birthday!

I know people think he was a jerk over the whole David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar thing, but in reading about him a lot of people said he was a pretty nice dude. Even took a picture for a fan at a Tool concert who apparently didn't know he was Eddie Van Halen.

Eddie was an amazing talent, but I always thought Roth was a hack who wrecked the music for me. I'm in the minority that thought the Hagar version was better.

Yeah, he had a musical ego and couldn't work with anyone...that's what I mean by "jerk". In normal life he was just a regular guy that liked fun (he did have a legendary temper though).

Craig Gass (comedian) lived with Eddie for awhile. It's a hilarious story.

I think outside of music, he was supposedly a nice guy. Musically, I think he was a perfectionist and probably did have a bit of an attitude/ego. One of my favorite stories.

No way. I loved David's work w/ EVH. His solo work (Cali Girls, Livin in Paradise, Just a Gigolo, Yankee Rose) are great as well.

I still like Sammy though. I thought David was the true showman. He was entertaining to watch.

you should check out Marc Maron's interview with DLR, and even Joe Rognan's with DLR...that dude, of course, has some stories about the VH family--apparently the patriarch was just a fucking genius.

and for all the DLR haters, just listen to that guy speak real for about 5 minutes. Your mind will be blown. That guy is, quite strangely, a living Aristotle or some this. Yeah, I know, that sounds lame, but I don't say things lightly. That guy is a fricking savant. He must be the coolest dude to talk to, about just about anything, because he's a fricking life genius.

I'll have to give them a listen. I know Eddie's father was a master clarinet and saxophone. Pretty crazy talented family.

He is, but lots of times he makes no sense...and I think that's on purpose, trying to be funny/entertaining.

If dude ever stopped being Diamond Dave and got serious....wow.

Listen to "Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now" off Diver Down. Jan Van Halen plays clarinet on that one. Killer solo.

Yeah I guess people in general that talented tend to let it inflate their heads

I don’t know how true it is but I was watching an interview with him were he basically said he invented that style of play
and VH invented that kind of rock music.
He couldn’t afford stuff so he bought parts for this guitar and that and built his own.

Pretty astonishing but he bought his own drum kit at first. Came home to find his brother playing it. Got pissed but said you know Alex is better at it then me so I’ll just take his guitar and play lol

I read he developed tapping because he saw Jimmy Page play the Heartbreaker solo live and he couldn't do the part shown here:

The ironic thing is his failure to do something his hero could do led to the creation of something his hero couldn't do

No disrespect to EVH but the dude wasn't young. He was on the back end of his life. Why don't people just face the truth? 65 isn't young.

IMO, it's because many people have difficulty with old age and death. Still a tragedy, but he lived life on his terms. It wouldn't matter if he died at 45 or 65. He got to live a life that most of us could only dream. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

Not totally true. Page used it to show off. Eddie realized it was like having a 6th finger on your hand and used it as an advantage to being able to play something you couldn't normally. It wasn't because Eddie couldn't play it.

Additionally, neither Page or Eddie created tapping. There were forms of it used by Jazz artist early on. Then Blues players in the 60's started using it.

Eddie just took it to a whole other level and used it for soloing and it caught on like crazy.

I think you misunderstand- Eddie and Alex went to a Zeppelin concert at the LA Forum around 1972 and they saw Page do a pull-off slide move down the neck. Eddie couldn't do that, so he simulated it with tapping. The rest is history. He's stated this in many interviews.

Dude- these days 65 IS young. People routinely live well into their 80's and 90's these days in fairly good health. 65 today is the equivalent of around 50 in 1970.

Prettys sure he didn't say he couldn't do it. I've never seen him say that.
He saw Page do that and said "what if I use my other hand and use my right hand as the nut? Now what if I use my LEFT hand as the nut?"
And that led to the way he tapped.
He describes it here, starting about 25:00 in.

wut?
65 is young, for working class. if you're a millionaire, you should expect to live to your 90s.

It's not the age with EVH, it's the mileage.
Dude smoked like a freight train, took every drug imaginable, and lived HARD.
An average person, yeah....should expect to live longer.
Dude was not "average" in any way.

If not for his son and 2nd wife, he wouldn't have lived this long.

Not many people got as much out of 65 years as EVH did.
