Ask them what they charge when you dont use one of their ATM's. Ask if you get charged to use it as a POS (using it at stores to buy things) card. Also ask what the max is that you are allowed to take out of your account per day. Sometimes they set it fairly low and you are able to change that limit.

Go to your bank's website and read the FAQ about the debit card. It will help you a bunch.

Yeah make sure it has a Visa/mastercard logo. That way when the debit card machines are broke it can still be used. Happens to me a lot.

keep in mind that your bank probably hates you, and it going to try and charge you for everything that they can (ie: using the debit card at a supermarket = $1 charge; using the card at another bank's ATM = $1 charge, in addition to whatever the other bank charges you). things like that.

hmmm.. I don't recieve any charges unless I use an ATM other than my Bank's. That is the norm for any card.

/loves Washington Mutual and really likes Bank of America..

18. need a checking account to get a debit card, and to get a checking account, you need to be able to legally sign a contract (ie: 18).

That's what i thought. Lasalle strictly says I have to be 18 before i can open an account and apply for debit card.

I got sent a debit card on my 16th birthday without even asking, and I have an account that's on my name only (but I'm in the UK so it might be different).

To be honest, I think it's a good thing, I've spent waaay to much money on stuff (especially Amazon because they take my debit card) than I should have. (£400+ in a year and a bit, plus £40 on other places).
Be glad you can't waste loads of money on the internet.

Same here, I got my Savings and Chequing accounts when I was 14, and have had it since... 18, now that's just bizarre..

you sure you guys aren't confusing debit cards with credit cards?

debit card = linked to a personal checking account, and draws money directly from that account
credit card = charge card. you can keep spending till the bill comes at the end of the money, regardless of the funds you have.

in order to get a debit card, you first need to have a checking account. in order to get a checking account (at least in NJ/NY), you need to be 18. legally, a check is considered to be the same thing as a contract; again, in NJ/NY, you need to be 18 to sign a contract. thus, debit card = checking account = need to be 18.

I ran into the same problem after I got my first job (16). I had my dad open up a new account for himself, and then he just gave me the debit card. only thing that sucked about it was that he was able to keep track of how much money I was spending and what I was spending it on.
